Her Majesty’s Vase: A horse racing trophy by John Samuel Hunt
By John Samuel Hunt
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
This silver presentation vase is a small replica of the classical Roman ‘Warwick Vase’. The body is cast and chased with fruiting vines below the rim. The central field has a continuous band with bearded Bacchic heads floating above a lion’s mask and pelt. The applied handles comprise gnarled twisted vine stems. The spreading stem is set on a square foot which in turn sits on an ebonised wooden plinth base. The plinth is applied with two vacant laurel wreath cartouches and two rectangular plaques, one finely engraved with the Royal Coat of Arms and the other inscribed “Plymouth, Devonport and Cornwall Races 1845, the gift of her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria, Augustus Coryton Esqr, W. R. Fortescue Esqr, Stewards” and “Her Majesty’s Vase, value 100gs., for three-year-old and upwards – Heats, about two miles, starting at the T.Y.C. Starting-post, once round, to the Grand Stand Winning-post.” Fully marked and stamped on the side of the foot ‘Hunt & Roskell Late Storr & Mortimer 2225’. English, assayed for London 1845. Provenance: Her Majesty Queen Victoria. Sir John Barker-Mill, Baronet of Mottisfont.Thence by descent. John Barker (1803-1860) was created 1st Baronet ‘of Mottisfont in the County of Southampton’ on 16 March 1836. A noted racehorse owner, Barker won numerous prestigious trophies with Giantess, Cymba, Miss Ellis and Pugilist. His most prestigious horse, Leviathan, sire of Giantess, won 16 of 21 starts and was sold to George IV for 2,000 guineas. Plymouth, Devonport and Cornwall Races were held from 1828 until 1930. The racecourse was a flat, oval course of 12 furlongs with a straight run-in of 2 ½ furlongs. ‘Royal Plates...

Pocket Globe by Nathaniel Hill, London 1754
Located in Milano, IT
Nathaniel Hill Pocket globe London, 1754 The globe is contained in its original case, which itself is covered in shark skin. There are slight gaps in the original paint on the sphere. The case no longer closes. The sphere measures 2.6 in (6.8 cm) in diameter whereas the case measures 2.9 in (7.4 cm) in diameter. lb 0.24 (kg 0.11) The globe is made up of twelve printed paper gores aligned and glued to the sphere. In the North Pacific Ocean there is a scroll with the inscription: A New terrestrial Globe by Nath. Hill, 1754. The celestial globe is depicted on the inside of the box. On the terrestrial globe much of central and southern Africa is empty. North America bears only the name of some British colonies. It shows California as a peninsula and the northwest coast of America as "unknown parts" (Alaska is not described and is only partially delineated; it would become part of the United States in 1867). The route of Admiral Anson is traced (1740) and the trade winds are indicated by arrows. Australia, still named New Holland (the new name would be introduced in 1829), is part of the west coast. (See Van der Krogt, P., Old Globes in the Netherlands, Utrecht 1984, p. 146 and Van der Krogt, P. - Dekker, E., Globes from the Western World, London 1993, p. 115.) Nathaniel Hill (London, news from 1746 to 1768) had impeccable professional credentials: he had done his apprenticeship with Richard Cushee, who at the time was carrying out surveying work for John Senex's Surrey map...

Antique Rare Bronze Gavel in the Form of a Fist Dated 1603, England
Located in Doha, QA
EVERY LAWYER AND JUDGE MUST HAVE! This extraordinary bronze gavel, dated 1603 and weights 1,3 kg. It is a rare and evocative example of early ceremonial instruments. Cast in the form of a clenched fist- symbolising authority, resolve, and order- it is mounted on a worn, aged wooden handle that enhances its historic character. The craftsmanship and materials suggest it originated in medieval or early Stuart England, a period when guilds, courts, and civic bodies often used symbolic tools to assert power and structure in meetings and proceedings. While the term “gavel” became widely recognised in the 18th and 19th centuries, mallet-like instruments were used much earlier, particularly in English trade guilds and legal contexts, where they served as emblems of control and decision-making. The clenched fist design is highly unusual, possibly denoting a unique ceremonial role or elevated authority within a guild or council. This piece is not only a striking object of early design but also a rare surviving example from the transitional period between the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras...

Rare English Queen Anne Antique Miniature Salesman Sample Tilt-Top Table
Located in Shippensburg, PA
A RARE AND FINE QUEEN ANNE MAHOGANY MINIATURE SALESMAN'S SAMPLE TILT-TOP CANDLESTAND England, circa last quarter of the 18th century Item # 403RPJ02P An exceedingly fine and rare salesman's sample of a perfectly scaled-down tilting top candlestand, it is crafted from dense mahogany and retains a rather early finish. The surface glows brilliantly under the old oxidized shellac, this turning nearly black in some areas with rich ruby hues coming through as rubbing and handling have worn it. The table is an exact replica of what a client would expect to receive in full size, a piece that would likely have been created for salesmen to take to prospective buyers to showcase what their shops could achieve in wood. The table retains its original battens on the underside, these flanking the original latch and catch that allow the top to easily rotate for storage. It is raised on a turned column with a swollen vasiform baluster over the curvy cabriole legs. Measurements: 12 1/2" H x 11 7/8" diameter Condition Report: Old finish with exceedingly fine silky surface patina throughout, old scuffs and abrasions that have oxidized, minor scars, a large stain (likely ink) to the top; old repaired break to one ankle; one screw missing from catch on underside of table; original hardware, original butterfly iron...

Georgian Mahogany Miniature Chest
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A Good Quality And Charming Early 19th Century Mahogany Miniature Chest, Having Well Figured Top Over Three Long Drawers With Original Brass Knobs And Boxwood Inlaid Escutcheons, Over Elegant Shaped Apron With Original Splayed Bracket Feet.  There is regular debate over whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who was looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents. Or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a few items were produced as scale models but a well established workshop as a form of physical catalogue in advance of a travelling salesman’s road trip around the country, for him to use to try and fill his order book with full size counterparts. We believe that this particular little Georgian Miniature Chest was probably made as an apprentice piece, due to the relative simplicity of it, combined with the exceptional execution, which maybe suggests that somebody was very much trying to impress somebody else. It is also slightly unusual in form, which again suggests it was made more as a one off item with a specific purpose, as opposed to a scale model of other items. It is certainly a charming piece of antique miniature furniture...
