Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.
Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.
The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)
Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.
From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

The ‘crème de la crème’ of scarves, this beauty is a one-of-a-kind luxury cushion (pillow) created from an exquisite vintage silk Hermes fashion scarf in their festive ‘Les Rubans Du Cheval’ equestrian pattern by Joachim Metz in 1988. A variety of elaborate ribbon rosettes in vibrant, colourful hues - an ornament made of pleated material, gathered so as to resemble a rose and worn as a decorative badge to show ranking in a competition.
The French company began in 1837 producing superior quality leather goods, harnesses and saddles, which makes sense that 100 years later the main theme on their luxury scarves is equestrian. Hermes scarves, known as ‘carre’ (squares), have become a symbol of French chic and are a highly desirable object across the globe that still continues to delight. Favoured by the ‘jet-setters’ of the 50s and 60s and gaining iconic status by Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and this particular elegant design even worn by Queen Elizabeth II. The name of the print along with the brand’s signature proudly features in the centre. The attractive equestrian design is a delicately detailed illustration of bridal equipment with buckles, leather straps, feminine mermaids holding up functional hoops and lions holding crests on other sections of the metal hardware adorning the elaborate piece. It features a display of two equestrian horse bride dressings symmetrical like a mirror image of each other. In a dramatic, busy picture of multicoloured ribbon colour way on a quality sumptuous twill silk with a beautiful texture. It was made using the ‘Lyonnaise technique’ silk screen process with each of it’s 13 frames traditional laid one by one by hand (the more complex patterns can go out to 42). Before being carefully unravelled to create our cushion, the edge was delicately hand rolled and hemmed, a distinctive French style finish of all Hermes scarves. Very beautiful desk Rondette lighter, created in New Jersey United States by The Ronson Co. during the art deco period, back in the 1934. This is a very unusual lighter designed with wonderful geometric patterns and crafted in solid steel with a central round body set upon two smaller cylindrical feet. Embellished with black lacquer, creating a great contrast with the base polished steel. Extremely well made and solid construction with very nice care and attention to all details. This surely is a very decorative piece and a great conversation item in gorgeous and exceptional preserved condition.

A Savory lighter designed by Alfred Dunhill.
This is a very scarce petrol pocket lighter, created in Switzerland by La Nationale for the Alfred Dunhill Company in Paris, back in the 1935. This semi-automatic full-size lighter is the iconic and popular Savory model, crafted with art deco patterns in solid silver-plate with high polished finish. This very early Dunhill lighter is highly collectible, is decorated with linear patterns and is accompanied by the Dunhill's fitted box. This model was marketed with two names, The Savory in France and The Handy in the rest of the world

Material: Plated .925 Sterling silver over brass.

Measurements: 50 mm by 34 mm by 12 mm (1.97 x 1.34 x 0.47 Inches).
Hallmarks: Stamped with the maker's mark and signed in full as follow, "ALFRED DUNHILL PARIS FAB. SUISSE MECAN AD SAVORY PATENT".
Alfred Dunhill
He inherited his father’s London saddlery in 1893. Following the increase in motor car ownership, Alfred developed the business to include motoring accessories, which he called ‘Dunhill’s Motorities’. This included goggles, timepieces, picnic sets, and leather coats, and it wasn’t long before the brand became associated with men’s general motoring attire. They opened two shops in Mayfair and had a catalogue of over 1300 items. Between the 1904 and 1905, Dunhill introduced their ‘Windshield Pipe’, to help drivers combat the effect of wind and travel on their ability to smoke. This marked both the end of the ‘motorities’ focus and their entry into the world of smoking ephemera, and they shortly opened their first tobacconist in 1907 on Duke Street. The proximity to several esteemed Private Members Clubs around the Mayfair, St James’ area ensured that the venture was a success. (From Nicholas Wells With Thanks).
