19th Century Caucasian Soumak Rug Tapestry Wall Art
Located in Barrington, IL
This remarkable Shirvan Soumak from the Caucasus region of Asia is a rare and collectible textile composed of six individually designed panels, each showcasing its own distinct color palette and pattern. Woven using the traditional Soumak technique, this piece features naturally dyed wool, with vegetable-based pigments that have gracefully matured over time, resulting in a beautifully nuanced patina. Unlike kilims, Soumak textiles are known for their thicker, more robust construction and embroidery-like detailing. The weaving technique—wrapping colored weft threads over warp yarns—produces a smooth face and a subtly textured back, creating both visual richness and lasting durability. Originally used for domestic bags and bedding storage (known as Mafrash), this type of weaving is now celebrated as collectible art. Whether displayed as a wall tapestry or integrated into a curated interior design, this Shirvan Soumak brings authenticity, artistry, and the enduring spirit of nomadic life into your space. A treasured heirloom-quality piece for collectors, connoisseurs, and designers alike. Dimensions: 3′ 4″ x 4’ 6″ Date of Manufacture: 4th Quarter of the 1800s Place of Origin: Caucasus Material: Wool pile on a wool foundation with organic vegetable dyes Condition: Wear consistent with age and use The Persian Knot Gallery, SKU 1254 Vintage tribal wall decor, Handwoven Caucasian kilim, Antique horse blanket...

Antique Heriz Carpet, Persia
Located in Evanston, IL
The madder red field with unusual all-over design featuring bold poly chrome palmettos linked in a trellis by blue dragon-like motifs, all within a wide deep blue flower-head and leaf main border. This rug consist of central medallions surrounded by four other nor similar medallions that incorporate a garden design, the design on top of field is not symmetrical to the bottom of the field. The rug frame geometric design is similar to the one shown in the medallions. Heriz carpets are durable and hard-wearing and they can last for generations. Part of the reason for the toughness of Heriz carpets is that these rugs were made in the area of Mount Sabalan which contains a major deposit of copper. Traces of copper in the drinking water of sheep produces high quality wool that is far more resilient than wool from other areas. Heriz rug weavers often make them in geometric, bold patterns with a large medallion dominating the field or they are all-over design. Such designs are traditional and often woven from memory. Heriz rugs are of coarse construction. The rugs range from 30 kpsi on the low end to 100–10 kpsi on the high end. It is rare to see a rug over 100 kpsi that would look like an authentic Heriz unless it is an antique silk Heriz.

Extremely Rare Antique Large Tekke Turkomen
Located in WYNNUM, QLD
Turkomen carpets of this size and quality have been continually in demand but very difficult to acquire. Verified as to age, it appears to have been woven for a chieftan or tribal leader as it would require a large yurt to accommodate it , and its date of origin is earlier than the period wherein significant, if any ,importation of Turkomen carpets to the West occurred. The wool (warp and weft) of this carpet is of superior and lanolin rich quality with a beautiful soft feel and pile in excellent condition. The richness of the colours—triple dipped in the dye vat...

Astonishing 19th Century Rare Afshar Tribal rug featured in famous book
Located in WYNNUM, QLD
Featured as an exemplar of Afshar tribal creativity in James Opie's notable book " Tribal Rugs " this extremely rare collector's piece was used in a lecture series we conducted on the possible albeit unexamined influence of tribal rugs on early 20th century European painting . The Afshars during the 19th century were amongst the dominant five nomadic groups in Iran and unquestionably the most daringly creative, and probably the most prolific in weaving output . Though the vast majority of their carpets exhibit traditional , more angular tribal patterns, this example is an extraordinary tribute to one female weaver as designer . There seems no precedent for the remarkable move into mind bending forms which veer off from the norm , which make it a high collectible and unquestionable investment piece . The achievement of two elements stand out : colour and design execution . The rich and varied natural dye colours are deep and powerful and include a range from the treasured eggplant , through a provocative orange , yellows ( saffron), pale peach, to three unusual blues and a rare rust brown . Green is also sensitively applied to the palette . The design also represents a departure from all norms before or since amongst Afshar rugs . The central medallions have been altered to create an almost moving, slightly hallucinatory effect ; the graceful tumbling of coloured leaves or vines is singular in its presentation, graceful yet very much alive . Most interesting are the designs within the medallion which seem to be an evocation of the ancient Chinese dragon and phoenix symbols . This theory gains a bit more traction when you look at the upright shrine type figure rising up alongside the medallions - these appear Chinese , as well, in a semi- abstract way-- influences such as these had been travelling across thewide continent of Asia for millenia . The borders are classic traditional Afshar , noted for their lovely re-creation of flower symbols , interlinking , and slightly irregular , showing the artistic seredipity of the artist/ weaver . The colours here too, particularly the blues and yellows are nothing short of spectacular . The amount of detailled hand work suggests that this piece would have required at least two years work on a ground loom- a humbling thought in thinking about the nomadic life in the 19th century. This rug is of a size and of such a beauty that in the right open modern decor, it could well occupy a wall space of distinction, as would a modern art canvas...

Unbelievable Botanical & Architectural Gem Antique Rug, circa 1890's
Located in Milwaukee, WI
Bella unbelievable Botanical & Architectural Gem antique rug About: Well... what is there to say about this rug that eyes can't see. It is beyond beautiful, beyond jaw-dropping, and more than grand - it is all-encompassing. It is vast in it's nourishment to the eyes and to the soul - a source of giving. Every single knot is tied with dedication, you can see that because the workmanship is unreal. Every color dyed with natural dyes, which you can see because of the richness and depth in each centimeter. The design of this rug incorporates the rich and luscious gardens of Persia, mixed with the iconic inspired architecture of the old empire. The handful of borders woven in this piece really frame the center perfectly. Each border could be a solo border of another rug, the detail, intricacy, and fluidity create a nice flow for the eyes before we get into the fairy tale in the center. The four corner spandrels are remarkably detailed surrounding the pistachio green finial...
