A wonderful example of a late 19th Century Persian Serapi. A true, fine weave with an even low wool pile. Soft vegetable dyes and an unusual French blue border. An open tribal design and demonstrates beautiful variation in color, referencing the artistry of the weavers. In beautiful condition with preserved sides and ends. This timeless, quintessential Serapi is an heirloom piece preserved to be enjoyed for years to come.

    Antique Large Persian Serapi Carpet Rug, c. 1900 Serapi rugs and carpets were woven in the Heriz district of Northwest Persia starting in the Mid-19th century in response to a great increase in demand for rugs internationally. Prior to that, there were no rugs woven (in Persia) for export that exhibited this stylized drawing of plant and flower forms. The lower knot density and thicker pile became the standard for these rugs, which lent to a less formal aesthetic that remains popular today. The neutral ground color of the border is unusual and sets of the other colors in an interesting way. The use of natural dyes in the Heriz workshops prevailed well into the 20th century, setting them apart from city workshops, which began to embrace synthetic dyes as early as the turn of the century.
