About the Item

Available now, these Brazilian Modern armchairs in white leather & iron, where designed by Carlo Hauner and manufactured by Forma Moveis in Brazil 1955 and are fabulous! The name of the model is “Concha” (“Shell” in Portuguese), as they resemble an open seashell. These iconic Mid-Century Modern armchairs consist of an intricate and delicate steel base with a soft curved, re-upholstered off white leather seat which is very comfortable. The armchairs are particularly rare as they are lower and wider (in the arms) than other making them especially comfortable. Sold as a set of two. These “Concha” armchairs are a visual treat and will look great any Mid-Century Modern, Modern, Transitional, Bohemian Chic or even a Hollywood Regency environment. Also, if you’re looking for iconic Brazilian Modern collectibles, look no further, these are the ones! Carlo Hauner (1927-1997) and Martin Eisler (1913-1977) were the primary designers for the iconic Brazilian furniture company Forma. They are most known for well-shaped armchairs made in iron, but the production is far more complex, handcrafted, and extensive. The wood pieces produced by Forma Móveis e Objetos de Arte during 1950 & 1960s in Brazil is highly designed and well-executed. Forma continued its model of serialized production and achieved great success in the diffusion of modern furniture, especially from 1959 onwards when it signed a contract with Knoll International. This partnership was a milestone that brought major names in international design to Brazil: Eero Saarinen, Florence Knoll, Harry Bertoia and Marcel Breuer. Eisler also opened a branch of Forma in Buenos Aires as an architectural, Industrial, and interior design firm with partners Arnold Hakel and Susi Aczel, which is still in business today, and known as Interieur Forma Advertisements. Mid-Century Modern Armchairs in Leather & Wood by Joaquim Tenreiro, 1955, Brazil
By Joaquim Tenreiro
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this Mid-Century Modern armchair set in beige leather & hardwood designed by Joaquim Tenreiro in 1955 is a showstopper. Full stop. The stately pair consists of a hardwood structure with ebonized feet, spring seat and backrest in leather. Both pieces have the "Tenreiro Arquitetura de Interiores SA" seal under the seat which can be seen by opening the zipper underneath the seat (as seen in the pics). The armchairs are very wide, making them not only super rare but very comfortable. These Brazilian Modern gems effortlessly flex into any Mid-Century Modern, modern, Danish modern or contemporary environment. This piece would also look wonderful in a boho chic, or Hollywood Regency styled home or office as well. During the restoration process, both armchairs where dissembled to understand their condition and to restore them following Tenreiro’s technique. Part of the process is shown in the last few images. Back in the fifties, most of the high-end furniture was created as special requests by wealthy patrons. As such, this is the case of this set that belonged to a private residence in Teresopolis, a well-known city for modernist architecture, two hours away from Rio de Janeiro. The mastery of the work is seen throughout the entire piece: The curved arms, joints and back sitting on a wide comfortable seat resting on Tenreiro’s iconic wood...
