About the Item

Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen, early 'egg' lounge chair, model 3316, leather, metal, Denmark, design 1958, produced 1966. This chair is one of the most iconic designs in the history of Danish design. This chair was originally designed for the SAS Hotel in Copenhagen in 1958. The hotel functioned as a showroom for Danish design and Jacobsen ambitiously took up the challenge of designing everything from the building to the furniture and even the smallest details of the door handles. For the furnishings, he was inspired by Eero Saarinen and Charles and Ray Eames. He initially molded the 'Egg' lounge chair from chicken wire and plaster, so as to perfect the desired shape of the seat shell, coming to this model without the seat cushion later models have. A truly classic Scandinavian Modern piece. This specific chair has been manufactured in 1966 as stated by the manufacturer label underneath the seating. Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971), originally trained as an architect is now most well-known for his furniture. It was only later in his career that Jacobsen created the pieces that he is now most known for. One of Jacobsen's main aims was to reduce material input to achieve clean visual lines. Technical quality and ergonomics were, however, not affected by the reduction. What is interesting is that where he followed mainly cubist functionalism in his architecture, he nevertheless mainly preferred organic forms in the design of his furniture. What all his works have in common, however, is the application of the right proportions, both within a piece of furniture and in its relationship to the room. Please be advised that this item is in good used condition. The leather is original, displaying signs of age, use, and patina.
