Classic Early Production Eero Saarinen for Knoll Womb Chair with Ottoman

About the Item

Shortly after Florence Knoll joined her husband, Hans in the running of Knoll , she presented the Finnish-born designer Eero Saarinen with a request: to create for her the world’s most comfortable chair, something, Saarinen recalls, that felt like “a basket full of pillows.” Saarinen went primal and organic coming off the MoMA design competition with Charles Eames . What, the designer figured, better signifies the very essence of comfort than the womb ? "It was designed on the theory that a great number of people have never really felt comfortable and secure since they left the womb,” the designer said of his chair, which began production in 1948 ottoman to follow in 1950 . The Womb chair, is genius in its simplicity. Comprised of few materials, the chair consists of a fabric covered foam over molded fiberglass shell set on a base of wrought iron . The skeletal look of the frame keeps the chair from appearing bulky despite the seat’s oversized form . It is the modernist replacement of an overstuffed wing type chair . "There seemed to be a need for a large and really comfortable chair to take the place of the old overstuffed chair,” Saarinen once said of his concept. Indeed, despite being indisputably comfortable, the Womb doesn’t require an abundance of padding and tufting — instead, its comfort owes to a perfectly shaped shell of fiberglass. This chair is a mid fifties production . Recently restored by a Knoll approved shop with fresh foam and covered in Knolls "A" grade Cato textile . Recent Knoll label applied with original Knoll label retained as well . Set on a recently powder coated black frame with fresh foot glides.

Harry Bertoia joined Florence and Husband Hans Knolls Company after leaving Charles Eames and Herman Miller. Florence Knoll Eames and Bertoia had all been schoolmates and collaborators in the early years of Cranbrook. On joining Knoll Bertoia was given free reign for a chair design. Being as much a sculptor as a designer he came up with the wire series. This chair being the large diamond chair. Set in wrought iron frame and attached by way of rubber mounts allowing a rocking action. With the ottoman and all recently covered in Knoll Cato fabric.
