About the Item

Eero Saarinen and Florence Knoll grew up together at Cranbrook school. Having remained close through the years Saarinen was asked to develop modern design furniture for her husbands company in 1946 . While he has had many iconic 20th C designs. Few are aware that this the Model 61, also known as the Grasshopper chair was his first design for Knoll . The curved, organic style of the chair’s one piece bentwood arm-leg reminded Saarinen of the beloved grasshopper’s hind legs. Created for comfort and lounging. The curved upholstered back flows into a deep angled seat. The continuous arm and leg elements are made of bent laminated wood. A relatively new, light yet strong material utilized particularly for aviation during World War II. This new material and style of manufacture was developed further by Saarinen and Charles Eames and adapted for post-war modernist furniture. This is important to remember as a number of more traditional materials were still scarce in the years immediately after the war. While not being as great a hit as the Womb chair the Grasshopper was in production 1946 - 1965. This chair has been rebuilt from the inside out. New webbing and foam covered in Knoll A grade Cato textile. Maple arms have been refinished in the original honey tone.

Large Chrome Frame Bertoia Knoll Diamond Chair with Ottoman in Red Cato Textile
By Harry Bertoia, Knoll
Located in Ferndale, MI
Harry Bertoia joined Florence and Husband Hans Knolls Company after leaving Charles Eames and Herman Miller. Florence Knoll Eames and Bertoia had all been schoolmates and collaborators in the early years of Cranbrook. On joining Knoll Bertoia was given free reign for a chair design. Being as much a sculptor as a designer he came up with the wire series. This chair being the large diamond chair. Set in wrought iron frame and attached by way of rubber mounts allowing a rocking action. With the ottoman and all recently covered in Knoll Cato fabric.

Vintage Swiss Production Grasshopper Chair by Eero Saarinen for Knoll, 1950s
By Eero Saarinen, Knoll
Located in Renens, CH
Grasshopper Chair by Eero Saarinen for Knoll The Grasshopper (or model 61) chair was designed by Eero Saarinen for Knoll in 1946, it was actually the first chair designed for the Knoll company, and turned out as an immediate success. Saarinen, an American but Finnish-born architect / industrial designer, was one of the main influencers of the new, modernist style now typical for mid-century American furniture design. His aim has always been to use simple forms, provide a comfortable user experience, while applying new techniques and often in cooperation with others. The use of laminated birch wood, regularly seen in the designs of Charles and Ray Eames is no coincidence, since they have worked together in the early 1940s. Other well-known pieces are the Womb Chair, and the Tulip or Pedestal series. Our lounge chair is a Knoll International original, a licensed early Swiss...
