About the Item

Sergio Rodrigues created the "Mole'' concept between 1956 and 1957 at the photographer Otto Stupakoff's request, who wanted a two-seater sofa for his studio. The sofa should have cushions where the person throws the body as if attracted by the piece's comfort. The sofa gave rise to the famous and award-winning Mole armchair. Both designs have rounded, solid wood frames, adjustable leather support straps, and floppy, oversized luxurious leather cushions. This one is made of a stunning solid Rosewood, with new cushions in brown leather. Both Mole armchair and ottoman present original leather straps. Although it was not well received initially, Mole would soon become an icon, perhaps the most well-known piece of Brazilian design. Its comfortable characteristics are a crucial project of national furniture design. The Mole sparked an international design trend that favored comfort and new attention to scale over the rigid and antiseptic concurrent design trends. In 1961 the Mole Armchair was prized at the IV Furniture Bienal in Italy. Today, Mole is part of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) collection in New York. This piece has the Rosewood structure and leather straps in the original condition. Wood restoration by our Workshop is included as a courtesy.
