$59,186.12

About

Sideboard “Credenza” model 29A designed by Arne Vodder for Sibast, Denmark, 1958-1959. Rosewood, steel and birch inner. Rare early model. Measures: H 80.5 cm/ 2' 8" L 250 cm/ 8' 3" D 47 cm/ 18 1/2" Freestanding Brazilian rosewood sideboard on six round steel legs with rosewood shoes. Front with two reversible sliding doors with respectively rosewood and original yellow and white paint. Middle section with seven drawers with curving handles. Bar section with fold-down front, inside covered with black Formica. Back fully veneered in rosewood. When Arne Vodder designed this low sideboard he also presented what is probably the most loved and iconic piece of Danish storage furniture from the 1950s-1960s. The model 29A was the flagship in a series of storage furniture that shared many of the same features. The series included chests of drawers, low sideboards and high cabinets. Recurring features were the drawers with curved and carved fronts, another was the option of reversible sliding doors colored on one side, and with wood veneer on the other. Just as the option of “shadow" paint on parts of the drawers. There was also the choice between metal legs with wooden "shoes", or a wooden leg frame. The series was made in two types of wood, rosewood and teak with the colors pale white and yellow available for the rosewood pieces and black for the teak pieces. However, some special orders were made with different colors. The series was long-lived and enjoyed great success in Europe as well as on the US market. The name "Credenza”, which in Italian simply means cabinet for tableware, probably stuck to this model as this was one of the few pieces of Danish Midcentury furniture that enjoyed a real commercial success in Italy. Literature: “Mobilia” no. 78, January 1962. “Bygge og Bo”, no. 3, September 1959, p. 5.

About the Designer

Arne Vodder

Along with Vernor Panton, Arne Vodder was a leading light of what might be called the “second generation” of forward-thinking 20th-century Danish furniture designers — those who, following in the footsteps of Hans Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl and others, first applied the skills, traditions and philosophical tenets of Danish craftsmanship to a modern furniture idiom. As a graduate student in architecture trained by Finn Juhl, Vodder made his mark in the 1960s, when modern design had gained wide acceptance, particularly in the business world. Accordingly, many of Vodder’s chairs are quiet in form — projecting an air of sturdiness and strength, rather than avant-garde styling. Vodder’s aesthetic flair was very pronounced in his cabinets and storage pieces — sideboards, bookcases, credenzas and buffets. In such pieces, Vodder liked to play with asymmetry. His bookcases often have a seemingly random array of variously sized shelves and nooks. A typical Vodder sideboard might have four sections, each different in purpose and look: an open stack of vertical shelves, and other cupboards covered with sliding panels in contrasting colored laminates and wood veneers. As you will see from the works on these pages, Arne Vodder had a sense of what kind of design was appropriate for which space: sobriety in the boardroom; playfulness at home.
