Art Deco Furniture

ART DECO STYLE

Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

ORIGINS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold geometric lines and forms, floral motifs
  • Use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood
  • Metal accents, shimmering mirrored finishes
  • Embellishments made from exotic animal hides, inlays of mother-of-pearl or ivory

ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.

Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.

The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)

Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.

From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

The vintage Art Deco furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes dressers, coffee tables, decorative objects and more.

Joseph Morel for Zellique Pulled Feather Bowl, American Studio Art Glass, 1988
By Zellique Studio 1
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage art glass bowl features striking Art Deco style 5-lobed pulled feather decor in blue, purple, and Bordeau red glass, enclosed in clear glass. The center of the bowl has a convex element, adding an Op-Art element to the composition. The design of the bowl is reminiscent of the pulled feather pieces that Morel created while at Orient & Plume, but the choice of semi-transparent and clear glass instead of colored iridescent glass, used in his earlier works, shows a Post Modern influence and a more contemporary take on the American Art Nouveau glass tradition. The bowl is signed in etching by the artist on the bottom with "Zellique Studio JM 8-1988 FBVI98". Joseph Morel is an established American glass artist, based in California. He began his career in glass artist at California State University, Chico; after graduating in 1973, he worked at Orient & Flume Art Glass, an internationally renowned glass studio, where he was mentored by visiting European glass masters over the next seven years. Orient & Flume early work was directed toward recreating the silver-luster or iridescent glass of turn-of-the-century artists like Tiffany, Steuben, and Loetz, for example, Tiffany Cypriote glass and Steuben Aurenes. The company regularly drew in other artists with various skills in working glass, creating learning opportunities for their employees. In 1980, Morel opened Zellique Art Glass in Benicia, California, where he was able to utilize his skills a glass designer. As the American art glass movement grew, other glass studios opened in Bay Area in 1980s - 1990s; in early 2000s there were five glassblowing studios in Benicia: Zellique Art Glass, Lindsay Art Glass, Nourot Glass, Opal, and Smyers Glass...

Vintage Hermes Equestrian Silk Scarf and Irish Linen Cushion Pillow
Located in Belfast, Northern Ireland
Katie Larmour Studio is the original vintage scarf pillow maker. Gaining notability for her unique idea and creations back in 2013 - featured in the likes of the Financial Times, and first selling here on 1stdibs in 2016 - our creations are of the absolute top most quality, craftsmanship and finesse. Thank-you for looking. Title: Vintage Hermes Equestrian Silk Scarf and Irish Linen Cushion Pillow The ‘crème de la crème’ of scarves, this beauty is a one-of-a-kind luxury cushion (pillow) created from an exquisite vintage silk Hermes fashion scarf in their festive ‘Les Rubans Du Cheval’ equestrian pattern by Joachim Metz in 1988. A variety of elaborate ribbon rosettes in vibrant, colourful hues - an ornament made of pleated material, gathered so as to resemble a rose and worn as a decorative badge to show ranking in a competition. The French company began in 1837 producing superior quality leather goods, harnesses and saddles, which makes sense that 100 years later the main theme on their luxury scarves is equestrian. Hermes scarves, known as ‘carre’ (squares), have become a symbol of French chic and are a highly desirable object across the globe that still continues to delight. Favoured by the ‘jet-setters’ of the 50s and 60s and gaining iconic status by Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and this particular elegant design even worn by Queen Elizabeth II. The name of the print along with the brand’s signature proudly features in the centre. The attractive equestrian design is a delicately detailed illustration of bridal equipment with buckles, leather straps, feminine mermaids holding up functional hoops and lions holding crests on other sections of the metal hardware adorning the elaborate piece. It features a display of two equestrian horse bride dressings symmetrical like a mirror image of each other. In a dramatic, busy picture of multicoloured ribbon colour way on a quality sumptuous twill silk with a beautiful texture. It was made using the ‘Lyonnaise technique’ silk screen process with each of it’s 13 frames traditional laid one by one by hand (the more complex patterns can go out to 42). Before being carefully unravelled to create our cushion, the edge was delicately hand rolled and hemmed, a distinctive French style finish of all Hermes scarves. We also have a couple of other similar stunning Hermes scarf cushions...

Jewelry box inward corners miniature hand painted Sterling Silver Salimbeni
Located in Firenze, FI
Large rectangular tabletop jewelery box with inward corners in gilded 925/1000 silver with translucent fired enamel on guillochè also on the sides and finished with fine hand engraving. In the center, a beautiful rectangular miniature cm. 4 x 5.5 hand painted in tempera on vegetable ivory plate by Roberto Masi depicting the portrait of Madame Boucard by Tamara De Lempicka (1931). Size cm. 14 x 19 x 3.2. Weight gr. 1,248. Designed by Giorgio Salimbeni in 1998 and manufactured in Florence in various specimens with different subjects and colours, in the headquarters of the Salimbeni company with completely manual execution by artisan artists with thick slab and large reinforcements suitable for withstanding numerous glazing firings at high heat about 800°C. Miniature is a very ancient technique which consists of painting works in small proportions. It was born for the decoration of the first letter of the paragraph of the books. Over the years, however, this technique is refined and enriched, then moving on to precious personal items. hand painted miniatures can be done with multiple different techniques. The most important that we use on our articles are of three kinds: 1) Fire enamel. 2) Water tempera on an ivory plate. 3) Painted on mother-of-pearl. Fire enameled miniatures: On a first layer of enamel generally white or very clear or even transparent suitably liquefied at a temperature of about 750 ° C, the chosen subject is painted using miniature...
