About the Item

This is a SM Coffee Table, initially designed by Peter Shelton and Lee Mindel for Knoll Studio in 2006. This piece dates to the 2010s. The design was purportedly inspired by the works of M.C. Escher, as it has a continuously looping base with no apparent beginning or end. The base is made of highly polished stainless steel. The table measures 30 inches long and 30 inches wide, and stands 14 inches high. There are several small scuffs and scratches on the base, and the glass has some wear on the edges. It nonetheless presents beautifully. Overall, this table is in very good condition. Please see photos.

Peter Ghyczy Glass Coffee Table with Stainless Steel Frame Biri T29
By Peter Ghyczy
Located in Oirlo, LI
This beautiful coffee table was designed by the Hungarian designer Peter Ghyczy in the 1980s. The table consists of a 30 mm thick glass plate that rests on a stainless steel frame. This frame is made of a continuous square tube of 4 x 4 cm. Both the legs and the resting points on which the table top rests are decorated with gold-coloured details. The resting points are depicted as little monks holding up the table top. The model of the table is T29 and comes from the Biri series, named after Ghyczy's nanny. The entire Biri series stands for sturdy yet graceful design, based on simple geometric shapes. Peter Ghyczy's work as a designer. Peter Ghyczy is one of several designers in the 20th century who were also immigrants – among them Henry van de Velde, Marcel Breuer, Hans Gugelot, Peter Maly – and had a major impact on German and international design. In 1968 he took a leading position at the company Elastogran in Lemförde in southern Lower Saxony, where he was responsible for the development of products made from polyurethane. Owner of the company Gottfried Reuter, former chemist at Bayer in Leverkusen, was an expert in the field of polyurethane production, for which he held several patents. In the 1960s he formed a company group (with a turnover of a few hundred million Deutschmarks based on these patents). Between 1968 and 1972 Peter Ghyczy developed many innovative designs, which identified him as one of the most productive designers of these years. In 1970 the Design-Center in Lemförde was inaugurated, built according to Ghyczy's design, made completely from polyurethane and being the first of its kind. It was one of the early German design studios, whose close cooperation between product design and technical development was unheard of in the plastics industry until then. This design studio gave birth to many novel, modular components, such as shelters, facade elements...
