Antique Parquetry, Ormolu and Leather Bureau Plat by Ross
Located in London, GB
Antique parquetry, ormolu and leather bureau plat by Ross English, 19th Century Height 76cm, width 120cm, depth 69cm Made by the renowned English furniture maker Donald Ross, this desk is a demonstration of some of his finest work. The desk is decorated with the iconic dotted parquetry trellis, and the centre is inset with a brown leather panel. Gold, debossed detailing adorns the border of the leather panel, its soft texture providing a smooth surface on which to write. An ormolu border frames the desk table top, the four edges mounted with motifs of male bearded masks among acanthus leaves. Below are two lockable drawers, each one decorated in a similar manner to the desk table top. The pair of storage compartments are separated by a central ormolu mount cast in the form of flowing acanthus leaves and foliage garlands. Four tapering legs support the desk, each one terminating in socket castors marked ‘JC’. Ross’ masterpiece is also labelled with a brass label ‘KG 8913’. In the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London is a bedside table by Donald Ross of a very similar design to the desk in Mayfair Gallery...

Footnotes: Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845) is documented in London Trade Directories of the period in various capacities but first appears listed at 7 Hanway Street, London in 1805 described as a '..dealer in china and glass'. But by 1826 the various facets of the business included '..buying and selling, exchanging and valuing china, cabinets, screens, bronzes etc'. Baldock's business seems to have largely involved trading in foreign items and between 1832-7 he was the purveyor of earthenware and glass to William IV and later purveyor of china to Queen Victoria from 1838 until his death. He is known to have repaired, re-modelled and adapted furniture...

Queen Anne Style Pedestal Desk
Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting an absolutely gorgeous Queen Anne Style pedestal desk. Made of walnut, butterflied walnut, burl walnut and oyster wood, the veneers on this piece are STUNNING ! Made in England at the end of the 19th Century (circa 1890) this is a stunning replica of an original Queen Anne piece from the late 17th/early 18th Century ! The attention to detail is outstanding from the use of the correct period veneers, right down to the banding and parquetry inlays, to the hardware. It is a diminutive desk as it should be as desk from the Queen Anne period were much, much smaller than desks made today due to the fact that in the 17/18th Century people were much smaller. It consists of 2 pedestals with 2 drawers on each pedestal facing to the front, and 2 doors that open to a single shelf on the other side. The removeable top has 3 working drawers to the front only. It has a fabulous distressed and aged brown leather insert on the top in an oval/floret shape. It sits on 4 curved padded feet. Not marked but obviously made by a top, top maker ! This desk was acquired and owned by a Mr. Jim Quist a well known businessman and high society character in Dallas, who resided at Swiss Ave., Dallas until his death in 2020. Provenance: From the Quist Estate in Dallas Condition: Very good original condition. The 2 teardrop pulls on the front center drawer are later replacements but compliment the period and style. Some very minor veneer repairs, professionally touched up. No keys. Dimensions: 29 inches tall, 54 inches wide and 33 inches deep. Kneehole Clearance 23.5 inches tall and 18.5 inches wide. Anne (6 February 1665 – 1 August 1714) was Queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland between 8 March 1702 and 1 May 1707. On 1 May 1707, under the Acts of Union, the kingdoms of England and Scotland united as a single sovereign state known as Great Britain. She continued to reign as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland until her death in 1714. Anne was born in the reign of Charles II to his younger brother and heir presumptive, James, whose suspected Roman Catholicism was unpopular in England. On Charles’s instructions, Anne and her elder sister, Mary, were raised as Anglicans. Mary married their Dutch Protestant cousin, William III of Orange...

Impressive Louis XV Style Bureau Plat/Writing Desk, after Riesener & J.Oeben
Located in Berlin, DE
AN IMPRESSIVE LOUIS XV STYLE BUREAU PLAT /DESCRIPTION - AFTER THE BUREAU DU ROI AT VERSAILLES BY J.-F. OEBEN AND J.-H. RIESENER The rectangular top, with the outline of an arc-en-arbalète, is fitted with an embossed leather writing surface and is fitted with four short drawers on the moulded apron with opposing false drawers. It stands on cabriole legs fitted with oval biscuit panels on the sides representing the Three Graces and inlaid with marquetry panels depicting bouquets of ribbons, foliage and floral tendrils, shells, coral and draped pearls, all with berry and foliage tendrils of ribbons, the cabriole legs fitted with lion skin loops hanging down to form spiral patterned clogs. Footnotes The Bureau du Roi at Versailles is perhaps the most famous piece of furniture in the world and certainly one of the most luxurious furniture creations of the 18th century. Louis XV ordered this cylinder-topped desk from Jean-François Oeben (1721-1763), who had already completed the design and much of the production by the time of his early death in 1763. Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806), who married Oeben's widow and took over his business, completed the desk in 1769. The final price was 62,000 livres, one of the highest prices ever paid for a piece of furniture up to that time (for comparison, the average annual salary of a worker in the 18th century was almost 300 livres). The office kept Riesener busy for the rest of his career, as evidenced by his numerous invoices for polishing and cleaning the bronzes and maintaining the extremely complicated mechanisms (the cylinder apparently opened and the writing slide moved forward, all with a simple turn of a key - modified in the 19th century, no one has since been able to reconstruct the original mechanism). At the height of the revolutionary excitement, Riesener even covered the royal double-L monogram...
