About the Item

A Louis XVI Style Gilt-Bronze Mounted Bois Satiné Parquetry Inlaid Writing Table, By Emmanuel Zwiener, Paris. The top of gilt-tooled tan leather surrounded by a stiff-leaf cast edge. The frieze drawer centred by a fine neo-classical Jasperware plaque flanked by ribbon-tied acanthus leaves. The table is raised on tapering square section legs headed by finely cast female masks and terminating in cap feet. Stamped to the reverse of the gilt-bronze mounts ‘ZN’. France, Circa 1880. This fine petit bureau plat or writing table has exceptional gilt-bronze mounts. The table is designed in the Louis XVI style, taking inspiration form the work of the famous ébéniste de roi Jean- Henri Riesener. The writing table is inspired by the celebrated bureau plat supplied by Jean-Henri Riesener in 1784 for the Cabinet Intérieur du Roi at Fontainebleau. Zwiener not only modifies the general form of Riesener’s design but in keeping with the prevalent style of the late 19th century incorporates fine neo-classical Jasperware plaques. Developed in England by Josiah Wedgwood circa 1775, the fashion for furniture mounted with pale Jasperware plaques proved popular across Europe and in particular in France. It was quickly imitated by the French Royal porcelain factory at Sèvres and continued to be popular throughout the 19th century as part of the Louis XVI revival. It is interesting to note that the Wedgwood firm exhibited at nearly all of the international exhibitions held in France in the 19th century, displaying plaques designed specifically for furniture mounts.
