Framed Chinese Embroidered Silk Collar Qing Dynasty
Located in Atlanta, GA
A silk collar from China dated to late Qing Dynasty circa 19th century. Known as Yunjian (Cloud Shoulder or Cloud Collar), this multi-lobed textile piece was a detachable collar worn around the shoulders as part of the traditional Chinese garment accessory. With its origin dated back to the Han Dynasty and being used until the end of Qing Dynasty, the form evolves with time, but much of the ornamentation and fundamental symbolism remains the same. This striking example features a two-tiered design with seven lobes on each circle, all of which are variations of the shape of auspicious "ruyi", which represents the head of Lingzhi mushroom, a symbol of longevity. The inner lobes feature elaborate embroidery floral design with long and short satin stitches. Notably, one panel has a double gourd design, the symbol of fortune. The outer lobes show a simpler but bolder vision with the outlines of the designs lineated with metallic threads buddled in chain stitches. Small jade beads were used to link the piece together and most of them still remain. The piece as a whole has a very pleasant lilac purple color, delicate with the jade beads. In Qing Dynasty, the silk collar with high quality was worn by noble or aristocratic women. The red color and the lotus boy symbol indicate that it was most likely part of the fashion accouterment worn during wedding ceremony. The collar is beautifully float mounted within a double conforming mat in a giltwood frame and wood backing. A stunningly presented period piece with story to tell. Reference: For a collection of Chinese embroidered collars...

Pair of Framed Chinese Ancestor Portraits, circa 1880s
Located in Chicago, IL
Believing that the departed continue to hold influence over the lives of the living, many Chinese households honor their ancestors in private family rituals, invoking their spirits for long life, health, and prosperity. Commemorative portraits, which came into vogue in the late Ming and Qing dynasties, were commissioned specifically for ancestor worship and were believed to house the spirits of the deceased. When properly cared for, one's ancestors were believed to be a powerful source of honor, protection, and good luck. This pair of ancestor portraits was hand-painted in the late-19th century and beautifully depicts a Qing-dynasty couple. While some ancestral portraits offer a more stylized representation of one's ancestors, this particular pair is painted with incredible realism and life-like expressions. Rather than depict the pair in a regal hall wearing elaborate finery, the couple is shown in a quiet home environment, seated at either end of a square tea table. Their surroundings are minimal, practically undecorated, and they wear simple, matching blue silk robes. Two young children stand beside them, each trying to capture the attention of their grandparent. We love the painting's close attention to detail and the glimpse it offers of Qing-dynasty interiors - from the carved apron of the marble-top table to the red silk lotus slippers...

Qing Dynasty Painting of a Royalty Related Couple with Dragon Motifs
Located in Yonkers, NY
A Chinese late Qing Dynasty period framed painting from the early 20th century of a royalty related couple with dragon motifs painted on a linen canvas. Created in China during the late Qing Dynasty in the early years of the 20th century, this custom framed painting depicts a couple wearing either a red (a symbol of luck in China) or green robe. The depiction of dragons relates them to the Imperial family, but having four claws and not five as codified, the couple is likely part of the royal family, not the Imperial couple themselves. Accented with typical motifs such as bats, flaming pearls and rain-filled clouds, the robes are filled with symbols. Wearing ornate headdresses, the couple is sitting on elegant chairs. Set inside custom made frames, the paintings show great signs of age. While the entire piece measures 40.5"W x 1"D x 53"H, the painting itself is 36.5"W x 49". With its vivid colors and interesting subject, this Chinese Qing Dynasty painting...

Japanese Antique Fukusa Textile Art Meiji Period
Located in Atlanta, GA
A Japanese silk Fukusa panel circa late 19th-early 20th century of Meiji Period. The front was beautifully decorated with Yuzen-zome, a labor intensive resist-dye technique invested by an artist monk Miyazaki Yuzensai (1654 -1736) of Edo period. The front cover likely depicts a scene from the Tale of Genji, showing a nobleman and his servant pays a visit to a lady in a fenced thatch-roof house under a high peak. The details of blossom trees and pines, as well as the characters, and scenery with a gradual color are astounding. It is telling that the Yuzen dying was used such an mastery. The piece has a red silk backing and still retains two red tassels on the lower corners as well as decorative stitches along the edges. There is a patched design on the back likely a Mon symbol (family crest). Fukusa is a traditional Japanese textile...

Japanese Two Panel Screen Chrysanthemums Through the Mist Obara Art Screen
Located in Hudson, NY
Japanese two panel screen: Chrysanthemums Through the Mist Obara Paper Art Screen. Surreal and masterful rendering of chrysanthemums cloaked in mist that varies in opacity made entirely of carefully arranged mulberry paper fibers in a Japanese art practice called Obara. Accented with gold leaf. Unique in terms of both execution and dreamlike mood. Made by Yamauchi Issei (b. 1929), stamped in the corner. Issei is well known throughout Japan as the leading artist in Obara Paper Art. Starting in 1948, he apprenticed with Fuji Tatsukichi, a leading proponent of the arts and crafts movement in Japan who worked to revive many cultural traditions on the brink of extinction. Issei started exhibiting in the Nitten in 1953, won the gold medal in 1963, and eventually became a juror.
