Early 19th Century Portrait of the Marsh Family Twins, by Thomas Arrowsmith (English: 1772 - 1834), circa 1830, an oil on canvas group portrait of the celebrated five children of the Marsh family of Boston. The two pair of twin girls and their younger brother became well known on both sides of the Atlantic in their day, because sets of twins were pretty rare, and these children were so ridiculously cute. Apparently the greatest artists of their day were all clamoring to paint their portraits. The Magazine Antiques ran an article on the children and their popularity about 20 years ago.
The short hair cuts sported by the girls are quite striking, and are actually not as odd and rare as many people assume. While longer hair enhanced with ringlets and other curls were very much the popular fashion, a good number of parents did boldly break away with these daring short bobs. Perhaps they were the "bohemians" of their day. The style grew in popularity, even among adults, following the French Revolution: dubbed "Guillotine Haircuts" they declared sympathy for the deposed royals.
In this particular instance, I believe the short hair was chosen because it focused more attention on the beautiful faces, and lessened the variations in height and hair color to make them all look even more alike.
A delightful painting, slightly Romantic School, a touch Folk Art, in excellent condition and signed on the reverse. Thomas Arrowsmith was a highly regarded artist who worked almost entirely in miniature. Such artists who created such amazingly detailed tiny portraits on ivory...

The Honorable John Maler Collier (British, 1850-1934) was an important artist who painted portraits, dramatic themes, and landscapes. Maler painted in the Pre-Raphaelite style, and was one of the most prominent portrait painters of his generation. He was educated at the Eton School and studied art in Munich and Heidelberg, as well as at the Slade School under Poynter and in Paris under Laurens. He also was encouraged by Millais and Alma-Tadema.
Presented is a large hillside and river landscape signed oil painting by Collier. Framed it measures 48" wide, 30.5" high and 3" deep. Canvas is 42" wide and 24" high. Frame has very light wear. Painting is in very fine condition.
Collier was one of the 24 founding members of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, of which he became Vice President and was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He exhibited no fewer than one hundred and thirty paintings at the Royal Academy and one hundred and sixty five at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, as well as many others in galleries throughout the country and abroad. He was the author of The Primer of Art (1882), A Manual of Oil Painting (1886) and The Art of Portrait Painting (1905). As a member of the Society of Equestrian Artists (SEA) and the American Academy of Equine Art, Roy is an artist of international repute.
Roy began work as a professional artist at the age of 14 while studying in the evenings at Manchester College of Art. In the early 1960s he moved to London and worked as a freelance artist and illustrator.
He has had many exhibitions including the Royal Academy, but the turning point of his career was in 1972 when he visited a racecourse and fell in love with the ‘sport of kings’. MICHAEL ROBERTS:
The preferred medium of the fashion journalist Michael Roberts was Canson art paper, which he scissored freehand into crisp-cut collages, or snipped into minute dots to reassemble into mosaics, for magazine covers or book illustrations. His art, bit by bit putting it together, reflected his life in fashion. He wrote about it, commissioned unexpected others to do so, photographed for media and ads, and charmed cranky legendary lensmen into snapping for him. He could source the clothes, choose the crazy locale, stage the shoot’s story, and write a witty critique of the enterprise. He was also always the most elegant person involved, effortlessly cool.
Roberts, who has died aged 75, never bothered with a résumé, since every new role or venture seemed to just develop, but they totted up to a serious career. He was a writer on the Sunday Times in the 1970s, when new couture catwalk drama and heightened designer celebrity demanded a fashion voice that was both theatre critic and gossip columnist. A 'Honeysuckle' pattern wallpaper panel designed by May Morris in 1883 for Morris & Co.
Although best known for her embroideries and textiles, May Morris also designed some wallpapers at her father’s firm Morris & Co. ‘Honeysuckle’ is her most famous wallpaper design; it was also one of the most popular patterns among consumers and is produced even today. May would have been about 21 years old when she created this pattern, and while she may have received some assistance from her father, the confident design shows an understanding of composition and color theory on the level of an experienced designer.
Dimensions: 52 3/8 in. H x 21 1/4 in. W (133.2 cm H x 54.2 cm W)
Condition: Very good. Paper with slight warping. Some slight creasing along selvedge. Light crease in center approximately 2 3/4 inches long. Not examined out of frame.
