One of the top three most desirable Harland Miller prints, this is a stunning large format print, mounted and framed in a white box frame. Frame size 162 cm x 121 cm Provenance: The Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh, Scotland. purchased on 7th May 2016 In late 2012, Miller had his first solo show at Ingleby Gallery entitled "Overcoming Optimism" Harland Miller Harland Miller is both a writer and artist (his debut novel Slow Down Arthur Stick to Thirty was published in 2000) and his paintings of books simultaneously provide a subject for the painter and an outlet for the writer. They combine the emotive possibilities of abstract expressionism with the quick punch of words to deliver their message, and for all the macho grist of their making, and often overwhelming scale, they somehow express a frailty that hints at the human condition. As Miller has said: “Painting is the worst medium to express narrative, but perhaps the best to hit a nerve”. Harland Miller was born in Yorkshire in 1964. He has lived in New York and Berlin and currently lives and works in London. Each poster has been archivally floated on a white matte board, under UV plexiglass and framed in a 1.25 inch white lacquer wood cube molding. The shoot took place at a photography studio in a penthouse at Thompson House, 200 Gray's Inn Road, London, England. The American photographer took a number of shots of the group, four of which were later embellished with psychedelic effects. The posters were printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd of London/ The publisher's information appears in the lower right margin of each poster. One a side note, Avedon sold the copyrights of both the photos he took that day and his psychedelic embellishments, executed in post production, to NEMS Enterprises, Ltd. - a firm run by the Beatles music manager Brian Epstein. On Aug 27, 1967, sixteen days after Avedon’s Beatles photo session, Beatles manager Brian Epstein died from an overdose of Carbitol. The Beatles were shocked. By strange twist of fate, the Beatles were attending Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s meditation seminar at Bangor, North Wales. The guru they had just met in London became a substitute for their use of psychedelics and a cushion for their bereavement. A 'Sunflower' pattern wallpaper panel designed by William Morris in 1879 and printed by Arthur Sanderson & Sons circa 1960 in a brilliant red and olive colorway. First designed in 1879, the William Morris ‘Sunflower’ wallpaper pattern has lasting appeal and has been printed for many generations of wallpaper enthusiasts. The sunflower as a design motif became extremely popular in the late 19th century in conjunction with the Arts & Crafts and Aesthetic Movements, which looked to nature for design inspiration. In 1940, Morris & Co. closed and their woodblocks and designs were acquired by Arthur Sanderson & Sons, who continues to print the wallpapers even today. This edition of the ‘Sunflower’ wallpaper was printed in the mid-20th century and features a vibrant red and olive colorway, a far cry from the natural palette of Morris’s original design.
