About the Item
Exceptional and highly collectible 1980s Bulgari earrings of bombe design, each centering on a vivid-red Burma ruby (approximately 2.5 carats each) and showcasing another 6 carats of very fine white diamonds, all set in 18 karat yellow gold. Two large oval rubies are of richly-saturated color and certified by GIA as Burma geographic origin.
- Featuring approximately 6 carats of fine white (approximately F-G color, VVS-VS clarity) marquise, tapered-baguette and round diamonds
- Showcasing 2 large oval rubies of approximately 2.5 carats each and a number of smaller buff-top rubies. Both large oval rubies are certified by GIA as Burma geographic origin

Detailed description: Central oval rubies are encircled by alternating bands of smaller diamonds and rubies creating an eye-catching color contrast that Bulgari is celebrated for. As a feature of bombe-design, there is a gradual sloping upwards from outer bands to the center rubies that gives the earrings a wonderful 3-dimensional quality and volume. The bombe-design, with a prominent gemstone at its domed center, also echoes the iconic and enduring Bulgari Trombino design (introduced in their rings in the 1930s) which allowed a large gemstone to ‘stand proud’ on top of a pave and baguette diamond setting. These earrings draw on that lineage but with an attractive twist that makes them unique and rare. Central ruby in each earring is encircled by a band of high-sparkle tapered-baguette diamonds which form a teardrop outline and allow for a placement of a larger marquise diamond at the earring top. A series of perfectly-matched buff-top rubies form the next outer band. This masterful design is completed by precisely set pave diamonds forming the outermost band which gracefully curves toward back of the earrings and gives the piece a sparkling profile. In addition to alternating color, Bulgari expertly alternates the stone-cut of each band, creating a piece that is at once seamless and striking. A gem of Bulgari 1980's high-jewelry design.

Bulgari
Greek silversmith Sotirios Voulgaris arrived in Rome in 1881 and set up his own shop there in 1884, calling it Bulgari, an Italianization of his last name (in the brand's logo, it's styled BVLGARI, using the classical Latin alphabet in a nod to ancient Roman culture). In 1905, he opened the company’s flagship boutique on Rome’s Via dei Condotti. Since then, Bulgari has looked to Rome as a source of reference for its fanciful and decidedly romantic designs for necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other accessories.
Although the iconic jewelry house found success with its silverwork and Art Deco designs, popular through the 1920s, Bulgari’s signature style — bold, often using yellow gold embellished with big colorful gemstones — began to emerge when Sotirios’s sons inherited the business, in 1932.
The brand truly hit its stride in the dolce vita era of the 1950s and ’60s, when the founder’s grandsons Paolo, Gianni and Nicola Bulgari decisively departed from demure traditional styles to develop the house’s exuberant multi-gem looks, attracting celebrity collectors like Elizabeth Taylor.
In the 1940s, Bulgari debuted perhaps its most famous design, the Serpenti bracelet watch. The piece’s snakelike coils were made possible by the tubogas jewelry technique, which links a flexible series of thin horizontal bands. Both the sleek, modern tubogas construction and the sinuous snake motif continue to be synonymous with the Bulgari brand.
