Art Deco Wrist Watches
ART DECO STYLE
Fascination with the Jazz Age is endless, and even today jewelry designers continue to be inspired by authentic Art Deco jewelry and watches.
The Art Deco period, encompassing the 1920s and ’30s, ushered in a very distinct look in the design of jewelry. There were many influences on the jewelry of the era that actually began to take shape prior to the 1920s. In 1909, Serge Diaghilev brought the Ballet Russes to Paris, and women went wild for the company’s exotic and vibrant costumes It’s no wonder, then, that jade, lapis lazuli, coral, turquoise and other bright gemstones became all the rage. There already existed a fascination with the East, particularly China and Japan, and motifs consisting of fans and masks started to show up in Art Deco jewelry.
However, the event that had the greatest influence on Deco was the excavation of the tomb of King Tut in 1922. When the world saw what was hidden in Tut’s burial chamber, it sent just about everyone into a frenzy. Pierre Cartier wrote in 1923 that “the discovery of the tomb will bring some sweeping changes in fashion jewelry.” And he couldn’t have been more right. “Egyptomania” left an indelible mark on all of the major jewelry houses, from Cartier to Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron and Georges Fouquet. (Cartier created some of the most iconic jewelry designs that defined this era.)
While a lot of Art Deco jewelry was black and white — the black coming from the use of onyx or black enamel and the white from rock crystal and diamonds — there is plenty of color in jewelry of the era. A perfect accent to diamonds in platinum settings were blue sapphires, emeralds and rubies, and these stones were also used in combination with each other.
Many designers employed coral, jade and lapis lazuli, too. In fact, some of the most important avant-garde jewelers of the period, like Jean Després and Jean Fouquet (son of Georges), would combine white gold with ebony and malachite for a jolt of color.
A lot of the jewelry produced during this time nodded to current fashion trends, and women often accessorized their accessories. The cloche hat was often accented with geometric diamond brooches or double-clip brooches. Backless evening dresses looked fabulous with sautoir necklaces, and long pearl necklaces that ended with tassels, popular during the Edwardian period, were favored by women everywhere, including Coco Chanel.

LIFETIME SERVICE COMMITMENT
This unique watch is entirely hand made sometime in the late 1920's. It still had the original cord band when we first purchased it, nearly 40 years ago. We have replaced it with modern leather otherwise you would not have been able to wear if as the old cord was to dried out. The workmanship on this piece is exceptional and the dial is original as well.
The dial done is Sterling Silver with Kiln Fired Printing was produced by Stern Freres and has Solid Gold Applied Breguet Style Arabic Numerals. The hands are original as well. Stern Freres bought the Patek Philippe Watch Company in the early 1930's when they went into bankruptcy. The Stern Family still own Patek Philippe to this day.
Movado is a Swiss watchmaking company founded in 1881 by Achilles Ditesheim in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The name "Movado" means "always in motion" in Esperanto, and the company has lived up to its name throughout its history with its commitment to innovation and design.
In its early years, Movado produced a wide variety of pocket watches, but it soon began to focus on wristwatches as they became increasingly popular. In 1912, Movado introduced its first wristwatch, the Ermeto, which was marketed as a travel watch with a stylish and protective case. The Ermeto was a huge success, and it helped to establish Movado as a leader in the wristwatch market.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Movado continued to innovate with new designs and technologies. In 1930, the company introduced its iconic Museum Watch, which features a simple, minimalist design with a single dot at 12 o'clock. The Museum Watch was designed by Nathan George Horwitt, a young American designer who was inspired by the Bauhaus movement. One of the most respected names in American watch making, was the house founded by Edward Howard in Boston Massachusetts in 1858. Howard was an exceptional watchmaker who had worked originally for the Willard Clock Company. Willard was the premier American clock maker and advanced American horology. Howard’s exceptional designs and innovations helped establish America as a watchmaking capital along with the Waltham Watch Company. Howard’s creativity helped establish the principles of industrialization and standardized parts. Howards watches were rugged and very accurate as well. Their case designs were innovative as well. Howard watches were used by scientists and engineers in military and industry because they were rugged and dependable.
In 1903, the Howard Watch Company was acquired by the Keystone Watch Case Company. Keystone continued to produce Howard watches under the Howard brand name until 1935. By that time the great depression had taken its toll on all but the most robust watch companies. This is a rare model by the legendary company and this one was produced just after Hamilton purchased the renowned house.
The watch shape called a Tortue, or Tortoise was an original design by Louis Cartier. He based it on Tortoises he saw holding up columns in a Greek Temple that was 3000 years old. The Tortue is still in the Cartier line today. Cartier was one of the first designers to "stylize" basic things around him. He looked at them and re-interpreted them by exaggeration, extension and "stylization."

This amazing watch is still in its original box and has never even been serviced (that means it must be serviced if you want to wear it). Everything is original on this watch including the spring bars and strap. The guarantee paper is in the box but it has the wrong number on it. I suspect that is maybe why it was never sold. The correct paper likely was sold with another watch and when the jeweler realized it, it was to late and could not sell the second one. If you are collecting new old stock watches...
