Dace and Chub - Graceful Scandinavian Freshwater Fish Lithograph, 1895
Located in Langweer, NL
Dace and Chub - Graceful Scandinavian Freshwater Fish Lithograph This elegant 19th-century lithograph from *Skandinaviens Fiskar* features three iconic freshwater fish species of Scandinavia: the Ide (Leuciscus idus), the Graining (Leuciscus grislagine), and the European Chub (Leuciscus cephalus). Beautifully illustrated by Wilhelm von Wright and published by P. A. Norstedt & Söners Förlag in Stockholm, this plate is an exquisite example of both scientific accuracy and artistic craftsmanship. At the top, the Ide (Leuciscus idus) is depicted with its slender, torpedo-shaped body and metallic, silver-gray scales, giving it a sleek and dynamic appearance. The slight golden hue along the lateral line and the soft pinkish tint of the fins are meticulously rendered, capturing the fish’s natural vibrancy. The Ide is a resilient and adaptable species, inhabiting rivers and lakes throughout northern Europe. It is prized both as a food fish...

Located in Langweer, NL
"Botanical Elegance: A Triptych of Garden and Greenhouse Splendors" Delight in the timeless allure of nature with our exquisite set of three original antique prints, "Botanical Elegance: A Triptych of Garden and Greenhouse Splendors". Culled from the esteemed 1896 publication "Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse" by Edward Step, these botanical illustrations epitomize the pinnacle of Victorian floral artistry. Each print showcases a different beloved species, rendered in precise detail and subtle hues. The selection includes the stately Hybrid Larkspur (Delphinium), the charming Larkspurs (Delphinium ajacis and Delphinium orientale), and the enchanting Columbines (Aquilegia vulgaris, Aquilegia chrysantha, and Aquilegia formosa), all depicted in their natural size to capture their true beauty. These prints are not mere reproductions; they are original works from the late 19th century, utilizing lithography—a technique that was the height of printing technology at the time. The meticulous hand-coloring applied after the initial printing process brings out the vibrant yet delicate colors of these florals, making each piece unique. Social Hierarchy of the Nagai Tartars - An Etching by Geissler, ca. 1800
Located in Langweer, NL
Title: "Social Hierarchy of the Nagai Tartars - An Etching by Geissler, ca. 1800" Description: This etching by Christian Gottfried Heinrich Geissler, titled "Nagai Tartars," is a fine representation of the German School from around the year 1800. It portrays three figures, labeled to indicate their social standing: a woman of distinction, her daughter, and a female servant, numerically annotated as 1, 2, and 3 respectively. The detailed depiction captures the intricate attire and cultural fashion of the period, reflecting the societal structure and familial roles within the Nagai Tartar community. The women are adorned in traditional garments that signify their status and identity, while the setting suggests a backdrop typical of their environment, providing a glimpse into the life of the Tartar people at the turn of the 19th century. The Nagai or Nogai Tartars were part of the Nogai Horde, a confederation that occupied the Pontic–Caspian steppe from about 1500 until they were displaced in the 17th century by the Kalmyks and Russians. They were named after Nogai Khan, a Mongol ruler, and were divided into groups such as the Budjak and Yedisan in the area north of the Black Sea. The Nogais were known to be pastoral nomads who grazed sheep, horses, and camels and were also involved in trade, raiding, and tribute. They spoke a form of Kypchak Turkic and were Muslim, although their religious institutions were not strongly developed. The societal structure of the Nogais was quite fluid, with personal prestige playing a significant role in their political organization. They were historically known for their slave raids across Eastern Europe, which were an important part of their economy. The term "Tatar" broadly refers to Turkic-speaking peoples, mainly found in west-central Russia and other former Soviet Republics. It was originally used to refer to various nomadic groups from the vast Central and Northern Asian region then known as Tartary. The largest Tatar group is the Volga Tatar from the Volga region in Russia. There are several Tatar groups, including the Volga Tatars and the Crimean Tatars, with the latter being subdivided into groups such as the Tats and the Nogai. The Tatars have a rich history that dates back to the 5th century when nomadic tribes in northeastern Mongolia around Lake Baikal were first recognized. They became part of Genghis Khan's army in the 13th century and were known to Europeans as Tatars. Following the disintegration of the Mongol Empire, the Tatars were particularly associated with the western part of the empire, the Golden Horde...

Jeune Fille Arabe in Traditional Attire from Wahlen's 1844 Lithographs
Located in Langweer, NL
Title: "Jeune Fille Arabe in Traditional Attire from Wahlen's 1844 Lithographs" Description: This hand-colored lithograph, titled *Jeune Fille Arabe* (Young Arab Girl), is from the Asia volume of Auguste Wahlen’s "Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de tous les Peuples de Monde" (Customs, Manners, and Dress of All the Peoples of the World), published in 1844. The print was created by an anonymous engraver after Wahlen’s work, with artists like Evrard Duverger, L. Markaert, and R. King contributing to the collection. Enhanced with Arabic gum on vellum paper, the lithograph offers a striking representation of an Arabian woman in traditional attire, including a striped dress, animal-print shawl, and ornate jewelry. Cultural and Artistic Insight: The subject's attire reflects a blend of practical clothing and decorative elements, such as the striped fabric and the leopard-patterned wrap. Her jewelry, including bracelets and a headpiece, highlights her status or cultural identity. The presence of a background with tropical trees and village buildings suggests that this scene might depict a coastal or rural area, where both traditional and more exotic elements are incorporated into daily life. Attractiveness: The vivid hand-coloring, along with the detailed rendering of fabric patterns and accessories, makes this print particularly appealing. The glossy finish provided by the Arabic gum adds depth to the colors, giving the illustration a luminous quality. The juxtaposition of traditional Arabian dress...

19th-Century Detailed Hand-Coloured Lithograph of a Large Medieval Siege Tower
Located in Langweer, NL
19th-Century Hand-Coloured Lithograph of a Large Medieval Siege Tower with Details Description: This finely executed hand-coloured lithograph presents a massive 'medieval siege tower', complete with structural details and mechanisms used during large-scale sieges. Taken from the 1842 publication 'Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums', this work by Friedrich Martin von Reibisch and Dr. Franz Kottenkamp highlights the engineering ingenuity of siege warfare during the Middle Ages. The central focus of the illustration is the monumental siege tower, meticulously depicted with wooden reinforcements, a sloped base, and numerous small windows for archers and infantry. Wheels at the foundation highlight the mobility of this immense structure, while a wooden floor plan in the top right corner provides an aerial view of its grid-based layout. Additionally, the inset diagrams on the left showcase key mechanical components, including pulley systems and structural beams used to assemble or operate the tower effectively. In the foreground, two smaller siege devices are displayed, likely for additional artillery or defensive support. The rolling landscape, complete with castles and distant hills, adds a scenic backdrop that complements the detailed technical rendering. Condition: This lithograph remains in very good condition, with well-preserved hand-colouring and sharp, clear lines. Minor age-toning and light foxing add to the print’s antique charm without diminishing its visual impact. Ideal for collectors of military history, medieval warfare, or engineering art...
