The plate is taken from Bromme’s influential *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, which served as both an educational tool and a visual record of 19th-century scientific understanding.
The composition prominently features several jellyfish species (2, 3, 4, 5, 6), each drawn in exquisite detail to showcase their translucent bodies, flowing tentacles, and umbrella-like bells. One species (1) resembles a comb jelly or ctenophore, with internal rows of cilia and trailing appendages, hinting at the era’s growing knowledge of deep-sea life.
Equally striking are the representations of corals and polyp colonies. A large central brain coral (10) is surrounded by branching and staghorn coral species (9, 11), red coral (12), and coral polyps (7, 8), including both individual and colonial organisms.
