Franco Albini Rosewood Mid-Century Modern “LB7” Modular Bookcase for Poggi, 1957
By Franco Albini, Poggi
Located in Vicenza, IT
LB7 bookcase, designed by Franco Albini and manufactured by Poggi in 1957. Modular bookstore composed by upholds, containers with flying and doors, shelve. The industrial standard for every product component allows permanent and different solutions, from the bearing structures to the elements. The structure does not need anchorages to the wall and can be placed in the middle of the space. This set is composed of 3 modules, ten shelves, and three containers. It is made of Rosewood, iron, and brass. Excellent vintage condition. Franco Albini was born in Robbiate in 1905, and after his childhood and part of his youth, he moved to Milan. He graduated at Politecnico of Milan, Faculty of Architecture, in 1929, and He collaborated for three years in Giò Ponti and Emilio Lancia’s office. He probably had his international contacts here, at The International Exposition of 1929 in Barcelona and Paris, where he visited le Corbusier’s office, as Franca Helg used to tell. Throughout these first three years, his works were undoubtedly related to XIXth Century. His meeting with Edoardo Persico marks an evident turnover towards rationalism and writers for “Casabella” magazine. Persico’s thoughtful and ironical comments on some of Albini’s drawings for office furniture caused him deep upsetting. “I spent days of real anxiety – tells Albini – I had to answer all questions. I had a long fever”. The new phase that the meeting provoked begins with opening his own first office at Via Panizza with Renato Camus and Giancarlo Palanti. The group of Architects starts taking care of social housing, participating in the competition for the Baracca neighborhood in 1932, and then realizing the Ifacp neighborhood: Fabio Filzi (1936/38), Gabriele D’Annunzio, and Ettore Ponti (1939). During those years, He also worked for his first private villa (Pestarini). It is mainly in the context of exhibitions that the Italian architect experiments the compromise between rigor and poetic fantasy that Pagano was talking about; He conceived all the elements that would become recurrent in all types of his work – Architecture, Interiors, Design. The 1933 opening of the new Triennale of Milano, in Palazzo dell’Arte, becomes an occasion to express the highly innovative character of rationalist thinking. In this place, to experiment with new materials and solutions, but most of all a “method”. Young rationalist architects cultivated the art of exhibiting as a communication lab, an open field to space solutions. Albini, with Giancarlo Palanti, sets the steel structure house (with R. Camus, G. Mazzoleni, G. Minoletti and coordination by G. Pagano) designing also its furniture. For the next Triennale in 1936, marked by Persico’s early death, Franco Albini, together with a group of young architects around Pagano, takes care of the exhibition of Dwelling, where he presented 3 types of lodgings. In the same year, Albini and Romano design the exhibition for Ancient Italian jewelry: vertical uprights, simple linear poles design space. This element is recurring in other works, like the Scipione exhibition (1941), Vanzetti stand (1942), and Olivetti shop in Paris (1956). The architectural space is readable through a grid, introducing a third dimension, the vertical one, with a sense of lightness and transparency. Upright is also used in design objects, such as the Veliero bookcase...

Midcentury Cubic Chromed Steel, Wood and Glass Dry Bar, Italy 1970s
By Willy Rizzo
Located in Roma, IT
Unique midcentury cubic dry bar in lacquered ash wood, mirrored steel and glass dry bar with hidden wheels. This gorgeous Willy Rizzo style dry bar was produced in Italy during the 1970s. The wheeled bar cart's four sides are in mirrored chromed steel, while the top is in dark smoked glass. It moves thanks to four hidden wheels, and the structure is veneered black lacquered oak. A design masterpiece that will become a cult furniture element in a midcentury bar or living room. Italian designer and photographer Willy Rizzo (1928-2013) first came to prominence in the 1960s as both a chronicler of and participant in La Dolce Vita, the glamorous, jet set lifestyle enjoyed by many international celebrities and socialites in the postwar era. While photography was Rizzo's first love, in the 1970s he developed a passion for interiors and launched a second successful career as a luxury furniture designer. Rizzo was born in Naples in 1928 but moved to France early. After expressing an interest in photography at the age of 12, Rizzo's mother gifted him an Agfa Box camera; soon he was shooting portraits of his classmates at Paris's Istituto Statale Italiano Leonardo Da Vinci. In the 1940s, Rizzo began his career as a photojournalist, working for several French publications, including Ciné Mondial, Point de Vue, and Image du Monde. In the aftermath of the Second World War, Rizzo notably covered the Nuremberg Trials and travelled to Tunisia for Point de Vue to photograph the conflict in North Africa, later published in Life Magazine. As his reputation grew, he was hired by France Dimanche to take portraits of the rich and famous at flashy events like the Cannes Film Festival. Rizzo's charm won the trust of royalty, dignitaries, and movie stars, allowing him to capture these public figures in unusually candid moments. Hoping to advance his career further, Rizzo travelled to New York with Black Star Agency in 1947 to photograph American starlets. When he returned to Paris two years later, he was invited to join Jean Prouvost’s newest publication in colour, Paris Match, as head photographer—a position that he held for 20 years and, along the way, sparked a new culture of celebrity photographers who were as intriguing and fashionable as their subjects. In 1959, he became the artistic director of Marie Claire and collaborated with other fashion magazines, such as Vogue. Throughout his career, Rizzo photographed dozens of stars, including Brigitte Bardot, Maria Callas, Salvador Dalí, Marlene Dietrich, Jane Fonda, Gene Kelly, and Gregory Peck, as well as striking up close friendships with famous personalities like Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, and Jack Nicholson. In 1962, Rizzo famously captured some of the last moments of Marilyn Monroe’s life on film before tragically committing suicide a few weeks later. In 1968, Rizzo married Italian actress Elsa Martinelli, and the pair relocated to Rome. It was here that Rizzo began his work in furniture design, starting with his newly-leased, run-down Roman apartment. Just for personal use (at first), Rizzo created a series one-of-a-kind pieces inspired by modernist icons, such as Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier. But as his glitterati friends—Rodolfo Parisi, Gigli Rizzi, Franco Rapetti, Salvador Dalí, Brigitte Bardot, and the like—became admirers of his work, Rizzo was flooded with design commissions. Rizzo went on to furnish apartments for Italian aristocracy in the Palazzo Borghese and Palazzo Ruspoli that same year and quickly earned an international reputation as a designer to the rich and famous. In response to ever-growing demand, he launched his own Tivoli-based company dedicated to contemporary furniture design handmade in lux materials such as wood, marble, stainless steel, brass, and wild boar. Over time, his team of eight grew to 150, and he was able to open shops in France and throughout Europe, as well as in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. With an emphasis on clean lines and geometric forms, Rizzo's tables, chairs, and accessories combined contemporary shapes with traditional materials—in contrast to many of his contemporaries, like Ettore Sottsass and Vico Magistretti, who were popularizing plastic, foam, and other synthetics in furniture production. Rizzo's most successful designs are many low, box-like tables in granite, metal, glass, or burled wood, often embellished with brass or chrome accents or built-in liquor cabinets or trays. Two examples of his most celebrated designs include the Alveo Coffee Table (1970s) for Mario Sabot and the circular Yin Yang Coffee Table...

18th Century Italian Neoclassical Wood Dresser Attributed to Francesco Bolgiè
By Francesco Bolgié
Located in IT
18th century Italian neoclassical carved, lacquered and gilded wood dresser attributed to Francesco Bolgiè (1752?-1834). The fine and elegant commode is made of finely carved, lacquered and gilded wood. It presents several stylistic and material elements characteristic of the wooden works and of the furniture present in the Piedmont area, between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. The richness of the ornaments, the gold leaf, the iconographic program and the significant level of cabinet making that characterizes this furniture are testimony of a wealthy client and the valuable work of a sculptor at the service of noble and royal families. Stylistically can be attributed to the famous italian sculptor Francesco Bolgiè (1752-1834). The front of the furniture and the two side are characterized by a complex decorative architecture. Two horizontal perimeter bands show gilded carved geometric patterns and palmettes on a blue lacquered backdrop. The low frame, in the centre and on the front, has a half-moon element inside which is finely carved a lion with two cupids and laurel branches. Near the corners, at the top, are carved a female faces, while at the bottom are some bees. The fretwork of the vertical bands draws strings that support a bunch of grapes with vine leaves. The side walls are lacquered in ochre yellow and, at the centre, a frame with acanthus leaves outlines a lacquered space in the tones of the ancient rose violaceous, with in the centre an ornate leaf with fine girali. On the four sides of this frame four large golden flowers harmonize the together. The front, similar in composition, has a yellow ochre background, internal frame with palmettes and four flowers. The large internal space, lacquered in antique pink, shows in the center a woman’s fece with a composition of grapes and wheat ears; from the face depart fine phytomorphic girals with racemes, bunches of grapes and vine leaves. The nozzle of the original lock, placed on the front of the cabinet and on top, is in gilded bronze, chiselled with ribbon motif. The front panel opens downwards. The interior of the cabinet, entirely lacquered in red, has a shelf and therefore two compartments. The red color cinnabar deliberately recalls the characteristic Chinese lacquer, at the time much loved for the decorations to cineseria furniture. The special folding lock system, which allows the opening and closing of the front door, is the original one. The commode rests on four conical wood legs witch are carved with acanthus leaves and small ramage, gilded and lacquered. The top of the furniture is in grey marble bardiglio valdieri, lithotype that had great success in Piedmont, in the north of Italy, since the middle of the 18th century. On it were usually exposed bronzes, candlesticks, watches and sculptures. The sculpted subjects refer to a precise iconographic programme. The female head is identifiable in Ceres, Mother Terra, which in classical iconography is depicted with the head surrounded by a sert of wheat ears and a cluster of grapes. Ceres or Demeter in Greek, sister of Zeus, in Greek mythology is the goddess of fertility, the guardian of crops, protector of agriculture and wheat, constant nurse of youth and of the green earth, author of the cycle of seasons, life and death, protector of marriage and sacred laws. The representation of Ceres, and its meaning, are linked to bees, symbol of virtue and chastity, allegory of Mother Earth, rebirth, mercy and justice. Just as the leaves of the vine and its fruits: in many cultures, from Greco-Roman to Christianity, the vine is a symbol of well-being, fruitfulness and blessing; it represents an abundant life and the joy that flows from it; it reflects the desire for fertility and beauty. It is also a sign of devotion to the fruits of the spirit and protection from evil. Fullness, wisdom, youth, maturation, prosperity are all images associated with the vine. Sacrifice, faith and good will are the qualities required for the vine to bear fruit. The inverted bezel shows the iconographic image of Amor Vincit...
