Ernst Martin Dettinger Set of "6057" Ash Chairs, Germany 1950s
By Ernst Martin Dettinger
Located in Utrecht, NL
The design of model “6057” dates to 1955, and shows the design heritage of the Bauhaus with unmistakeable mid-century modern touches. While the appearance of these chairs may seem uncluttered and simple at first glance, they subtly show the influential design schools, the Werkbund design and crafts association, and the Bauhaus legacy, illustrating the interconnections between design and contemporary history, everyday culture and the global political context in divided Germany. A (semi-)official encouraged/forced acceptance of a “gute Form” took place in Germany, which, in both the west and the east, was widely, although not exclusively, understood as a continuation of the reduced, rationalized, ornament free forms of inter-War Functionalist Modernism. These chairs are good examples of this with a streamlined, modernist look. Each of the six chairs is made of quality ash wood with a beautiful grain and colour. The subtly angular structure features straight and curved edges, combining the organicity of traditional craftsmanship and the architectural know-how of mid-century furniture designers, such as Ernst Martin Dettinger. The design is in the vein of the iconic Windsor chair as the backs are constructed of slender spindles that are socketed into the solid wooden seats. The thicker spindles extending downward form the legs, and those extending upward form the backs. The masterfully sculpted and symmetrically arranged individual spindles undeniably define the overall look, but the seats and tapered legs are just as appealing. The seats are upholstered in a soft fabric enhancing the sitting and visual comfort as well. The design of this set of six offers plenty visually with a striking construction and personality. The details, such as the joinery and woodworking reveal the high quality craftsmanship of the manufacturer, Lucas Schnaidt...

Chair by Dom Hans van der Laan, Netherlands, 1960s
By Dom Hans van der Laan
Located in Utrecht, NL
This chair was originally designed by the Dutch Benedictine monk and architect, Dom Hans van der Laan for the Abbey Church of St. Benedictusberg located near the Dutch town of Vaals. This easy chair is in an untouched condition. It was made of pinewood and feature copper nails, giving this piece an understated, rustic look. The chair was entirely painted grey, including the nails. The main focus of van der Laan’s design was functionality and rationality, which is reflected in the openings on the sides and on the back that serves the purpose of joining multiple pieces together. This chair is a beautiful piece of Dutch design history. Although Dom van der Laan left a small body of work behind, his legacy is highly regarded in the world of architecture. The St. Benedictusberg Abbey in Vaals and its interior quickly became his masterpiece at the age of 53. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Item has some small marks and scratches. Dimensions: 21.2 in W x 20.8 in D x 37.4 in H 54 cm W x 53 cm D x 95 cm H About the designer: Dom Hans van der Laan (1904-1991) was the ninth of the eleven recorded children of Leiden architect Leo van der...

Aluminum Rational Jigsaw Chair by Studio Julien Manaira
Located in Geneve, CH
Aluminum rational jigsaw chair by Studio Julien Manaira Dimensions: 65 x 46 x 94 cm Materials: brushed and waxed aluminum The intention behind this project is to highlight the traces from the actions of the maker. In this sense, the choice of the jigsaw is deliberate and allows a strong physical relation between maker and material, that will remain tangible in the final object. Each of these cuts is unique and have their own character emanating from what happened on the very moment of the making. They stand out from the regular and smooth cuts realized digitally in a factory. Digital and manual inputs have equal importance in the objects. They communicate their differences in order to create a strong dynamic between the two methodologies of work. Without suggesting which is better, they create their own narrative and are the reflection of two temporalities: the digital work is continuous when the manual work is the track of a particular moment. The created objects intend to be the presentation of these approaches of the material. The dynamic and anarchic way of cutting by hand respond to the linear and supervised vision of the computer-cut elements. The pieces intend to be functional objects carrying the narrated discussion between the controlled and uncontrolled treatments of the material. Julien Manaira (France,1992) successively studied industrial design (La martinière, Lyon) and fine arts -option product design (Esad, Reims). In 2015 he came to Amsterdam to follow a temporary master program (Materialisation in Art and Design) at the Sandberg Institute where he graduated in 2017 before opening his studio in the same city. His graduation project ‘The once liquid plastic’ was awarded by the RADO Star Prize 2017 and the 3rd prize of the Pure Talent Contest at IMM Cologne 2018. In the last years, he exhibited his works in different established and recognized organizations such as Paris Design Week, IMM Cologne, Design Parade Hyères, and Milan Design Week. He was commissioned by different companies, among which Nilufar Gallery, Nubikk, Van Dijk Store as well as private clients. The main focus in his practice is setting processes that allow the manufacturer or him to be mentally and physically involved in the transformation of material towards an object. He believes that this empowerment is a way to engage deeper the audience or user’s perception, and therefore create a stronger connection with the object. Serendipity, combining industrial and artisanal material, are examples of how he aims to create objects that are able to communicate their undergone transformations. Iris Box...
