Contemporary New York artist Peter Buchman's 'Note to Self' is created using laser-cut plexiglass, acrylic medium, and enamel on wood. It's part of his Voice-Over series, in which the artist gathers linguistic phrases to immortalize the valuable contributions of other cultures to the American Diaspora. To describe Buchman's word paintings as 'A Figure of Speech' is an understatement of the profound soulfulness they embody. They bear the marks of the artist's hand but also carry the collective spirit of many who came before him. These words derive from familiar phrases, music albums, his unique brand of irony, and the very essence of the human form.
For this specific piece, 'Note to Self,' Peter is fascinated by what he said - she said and all of that back-and-forth cross-communication. Phrases like 'word on the street' and 'news at eleven'—we are all familiar with this kind of language, but how does it make us feel to see it stacked on top of each other? Writing lists, scribbling notes, verbatim, talking to ourselves or our partners... where does it all get us? Everywhere? Nowhere? This communication and street slang intrigues him. Whether he hears it or actually sees the words, the language grabs his attention, and he wants to discuss it again... with you, the viewer. Will you engage? Signed and dated en verso. This is a commissioned piece and will ship directly from the artist's studio.
American artist Peter Buchman has BFA in Illustration from The Rhode Island School of Design and did a Sculpture Residency at The School of Visual Arts in New York. The imagery for this edition is derived in part from what Michael Bauer calls his “telephone drawings”—quick, loose sketches made while talking on the phone or otherwise distracted. Bauer saves these doodles, no matter how rough or silly, and uses them as raw materials to be copied, scanned, altered, and combined. Bauer often works in series, making groups of paintings that metaphorically “talk back” to one another while simultaneously standing on their own as individual works. As he says, “Every painting that I do relies on the last twenty I did.” In a neat literalization of his process, this print includes the words “baba” and “creme,” recurring terms Bauer uses as verbal readymades for their phonetic qualities and mutable meanings.
The amorphic, animalistic forms of German painter Michael Bauer are built upon color washes, meandering lines, and bulbous protrusions. Utilizing a variety of rendering techniques and materials, including pointillism, text and high-chroma colors, Bauer transforms his free-form compositions into dynamic and ornamented abstractions. He borrows from the colorful tradition of Modernist composition, juxtaposing collaged cutouts with a bevy of 20th century painting methodologies—including Cubist, Pop, and Surrealist techniques—to make the swirling paintings...

As an artist who spent hours drawing and sketching in pencil, the dramatic black and white hardened scenes just gripped him. He wanted smoke and spit and to rough something up. He wanted to emulate those textures, those scenes, that gut reaction with danger but in a poetic sense. First, I experimented with a metal cookie tin placed on a hot stove. It didn't work because the ice cube melted too quickly. I tried a hairdryer but as the cube melted, the hair-blower blew the remaining cube away. Thus, I let the cube melt on it's own accord in real time. It took about three hours to fully dissolve into a puddle of water. I used a glass plate on Glassene paper: all that transparency made the black lines of the plate look line a charcoal line drawing. The title is important because it precisely explains the work: The Long Dissolve is exactly of an ice cube dissolving." —Burt Barr

Jeff Hudson's paintings come from his life experiences, and trust in the power and beauty of color harmonies and fragile structure to make a visual statement of pleasure for the mind and soul.
Hudson went to The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston 1968-1973 where he studied all mediums and focused on large color field painting. He also had access to video equipment and made video Art. In 1974 he was hired along with Jane Hudson to start the Video Performance department at the Museum School and taught for 30 years and was always involved in fine art everyday. Hudson's works embraced the modern and Postmodern.
Jeff played in a Punk band The Rentals and a New Wave band Jeff and Jane Hudson. They played all the venues in NYC and Boston and released a number of records. (they have been re- released and are on ITunes.)
