"Hauling the Net, " Rare Art Deco Bronze with Nude Male Fisherman
By Alexandre Ouline
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This powerful bronze -- depicting a nude fisherman hauling in his net -- is a superb example of Art Deco sculpture influenced by Auguste Rodin's emphasis on the emotion and physicality of the human figure. Here, the strength and muscularity of the male figure is shown to great effect, its power belying the sculpture's diminutive size. It was sculpted by Alexandre Ouline, who executed a series of bronzes that depicted male figures performing feats of strength and courage, such as pulling a great weight or steering a ship in a stormy sea. Ouline won First Prize in the Seine et Marne agricultural fair...

Cubist Wood Sculpture of a Nude by Russian American Sculptor Boris Blai, 1930s
By Boris Blai
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A carved wooden cubist sculpture of a seated nude woman by Boris Blai (1893-1985).
This carving likely dates to the 1920s-1930s (during Blai's time in Philadelphia).
Most likely constructed of sections of laminated basswood stained with a dark stain, it has an integral plinth with button feet and a carved signature the base.
The sharp angular lines of the body are starkly contrasted by the soft-edged, almost nondescript depiction of the head and face.
Blai was born in Russia and studied in academies in St. Petersburg, Paris, and eventually under Auguste Rodin. After WWI, Blai emigrated to the US, where aside from his prolific art production, he was also instrumental in the founding of the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, the Long Beach Island...

A brilliant piece of sculpture capturing one of the most dramatic moments in American baseball, this 1953 bronze by Joe Brown shows a baseball player touching second base with his right foot and readying to throw the ball to first base for the second out with his right arm. The figure is cantilvered over the wood base, and the placement of his arms and legs is dancelike in its grace and strength. Located in Philadelphia, PA
This remarkable pair of "faun" and "nymph" sculptures memorializes the legendary performance of Vaslav Nijinsky as the Faun in Ballets Russes' renowned production of "Afternoon of a Faun" in 1912. Sculpted by Fred Press several decades later -- in the 1930s or 1940s -- the Faun captures the bold and sensual costume and headpiece of Nijinsky's character as designed by Léon Bakst, complete with spotted, form-fitting tights, a bare torso and a headpiece with horns in gold. "Allegory of Speed, " Art Deco Bronze Depicting the Ecstasy of Athletic Effort
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Large, rare and dramatic, this Art Deco bronze by Robert Delandre, circa 1930, depicts three nude male athletes all straining to reach the finish line of the race, their arms straining forward to win, and upward in ecstatic joy. The concentration and focus evident in their faces, and the beauty of their physiques, is beautifully captured by the artist, and the bronze is gorgeously finished in a green-brown patina that brings out the details of each figure. Delandre is largely known for his tabletop bronzes for the home or office, but he also entered competitions for public monuments and memorials. His most famous work is the "Monument to the Latham 47 Heroes" in Caudebec en Caux, France. The sculpture honors the men who disappeared in the prototype of the Latham 47 twin engine airplane in 1928, with Roald...
