About the Item
An extraordinary piece of American sculpture, this depiction of a young woman, dated 1930, was sculpted in white marble by John Gregory -- who executed 9 large bas relief panels for the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. -- for Paul Philippe Cret, who was the Library's architect. Clearly Gregory and Cret were friends as well as colleagues, and this sculpture may have been executed as a gesture of appreciation from Gregory to Cret; indeed, the Library's cornerstone was laid the same year this sculpture was created. Gregory is also known for his "Orpheus" bronze at Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina, and an equestrian sculpture of General Anthony Wayne at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Cret was America's leading practitioner of a Classicized Art Deco architecture in America, and designed the Rodin Museum, Federal Reserve Bank building and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge in Philadelphia, the National Memorial Arch at the Valley Forge National Historical Park in suburban Philadelphia, and the main building of the University of Texas campus in Austin, among many others. The sculpture is carved in white marble and is mounted on its original walnut base.
