Signature: Signed, dated, titled on the reverse Condition: Good This mid century work by Paul Van Hoeydonck is a direct and strong composition, like so many of Van Hoeydonck’s Planete works. It measures 48” x 48” and is a mixed media composition. It is a composition on masonite or a similar material. There is flat black and gloss black paint. Perhaps the gloss is lacquer. The surface is highly textured. The black areas have small finish nails, lying flat, attached to the surface. The other areas have sand or some other particulate in the paint. It is signed, titled and dated on the reverse. The date looks like “1961” but it could be “1969.” Please see pictures. Stylistically, this work looks very much like his work from 1961-1962. The piece is in good condition. There is a faint scratch in the upper left and some very small chips on the edges. Please see pictures. There also might be very, very light surface dirt throughout. Moved to New York in 1940 and later joined the Naval Air Corps at the age of 18. He served as an Aviation Cadet in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945. At the end of WWII, Bill returned to Texas. At 21, Bill re-focused his energy and enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Art as an Illustration major. What followed was a whirlwind of success, great friendships and a sense of belonging he had never before experienced. Art was his calling and the art-world could not have been less prepared for the likes of Bill Shields. He took them by storm, first Houston, then San Francisco, followed by New York in the late 60's. For 35 years, Bill produced some of the country's best illustrations: fresh, playful, loose and innovative. His illustrations were coveted by such clients as Bantam Books, Time Life, MacMillan Publishing Co., and were awarded numerous gold medals by the Societies of Illustrators in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, and the Houston Artists Guild. Later, following inspirational trips to Mexico and France, Bill shifted his attention to the self-directed world of fine art. After years of sculpting, making assemblages, painting nudes and landscapes, he settled on the exploration of large abstract oil paintings. Frame in poor condition This oil on canvas is by the noted avant garde Japanese artist Sakurai Takami (1928-2016). It was created sometime between 1971, when Takami lived in San Francisco and was a member of and exhibited with the “Konnyaku Commune” and 1978 when he exhibited with the Vorpal Gallery in San Francisco. This painting was purchased from the Vorpal Gallery. The painting is in very good condition. It is unsigned, but the title is on the side of the metal frame. The frame is fine, but the mat is stained and in poor condition. I will include the frame for protection and provenance. Sakurai was a main member of the avant-garde art group “Kyushu-ha”. Kyushu-ha” created a major trend among contemporary art in post-war Japan, which spread from Fukuoka to the whole country and also France, the United States and other overseas countries. Throughout his life he was very dramatic; his enormous and diverse works are energetic and face us with the true meaning of expression. Initially his main focus was on informal paintings, but it gradually expanded towards anti-artistic objects and performances. His works are characterized by the usage of materials that are connected with the smell of a workers life, such as coal tar, asphalt, woven mats and dungarees (jute bag). Shortly after Kyushu-ha disbanded in 1968, Sakurai Takami moved to San Francisco. From 1973 onward, he lived in France. The people and faces in Sakurai’s paintings are coloured red, so that the colour, a symbol of heat, becomes a “social sign”. Each person has a life of their own, while at the same time expressing the colourful life of human communities, like the hippies. This painting with added elements is an excellent example of Joe Doyle’s abstract illusionist art. It is composed of acrylic on shaped canvas with fabric elements added. It measures 36 x 43 inches. Each edge has been painted except for the left edge which has a frame. The right edge has been shaped. The black elements of the tent-like structure are added fabric. The work is signed, titled "564" and dated on the reverse. As well it bears a label from Harcourts Gallery, a gallery in San Francisco during the 1980s and 1990s. The work is in very good condition. Joe Doyle established himself as a painter during the movement toward new abstraction in San Francisco in the mid-seventies. Stylistically his work evolved from photo-realist renderings of aircraft which exaggerated differences in focus of background and foreground" By 1975 his imagery shifted to arrangements of flat, geometric forms and tubular squiggles in a trompe l'oeil manner that created the illusion of a multi-layered, three dimensional space. By the late 1970s Doyle, along with James Havard, Jack Reilly, George D. Green, and others, had attained national prominence working this style now referred to as Abstract Illusionism. Doyle and others were included in 'Reality of Illusion' a large touring exhibition of primarily American illusionist artists organized by the University of Southern California and The Denver Art Museum. Doyle enrolled at San Francisco State College receiving his M.A. in 1971. At 21, Bill re-focused his energy and enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Art as an Illustration major. What followed was a whirlwind of success, great friendships and a sense of belonging he had never before experienced. Art was his calling and the art-world could not have been less prepared for the likes of Bill Shields. He took them by storm, first Houston, then San Francisco, followed by New York in the late 60's. For 35 years, Bill produced some of the country's best illustrations: fresh, playful, loose and innovative. His illustrations were coveted by such clients as Bantam Books, Time Life, MacMillan Publishing Co., and were awarded numerous gold medals by the Societies of Illustrators in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, and the Houston Artists Guild. Later, following inspirational trips to Mexico and France, Bill shifted his attention to the self-directed world of fine art. After years of sculpting, making assemblages, painting nudes and landscapes, he settled on the exploration of large abstract oil paintings. His paintings have been exhibited in galleries in San Francisco, Connecticut and New York. Wall was born in Wyoming on September 10, 1917 but moved to a homestead on an Indian reservation in Uintah, Utah in 1919. After graduating from high school at age 16 she left home to attend college, graduating at age 20 and began teaching high school at age 21. She moved to Los Angeles where she became an Army materials inspector during WWII. She moved to Northern California and became a pilot, but entered the service as a WAC. Here she trained as a physical therapist and became an officer. She remained in the service until 1949. In 1950 she entered the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, studying there until leaving for Paris in 1952 where she moved into the Academie Frochot. Returning to the CSFA in 1955 she worked as an artist until she had to take a job to make a living in 1957. Most of her work in printmaking was done in 1952, before leaving for Paris. They are, for the most part, gestural, Abstract Expressionist lithographs, done on the press at the CSFA at night after everyone had gone home. Her teachers were James Budd Dixon, Robert McChesney and, after 1955, Nate Oliviera and fellow students included James Kelly...
