Antique French Porcelain, Gilt and Silvered Brass Clock Set
Located in London, GB
This wonderful clock set, which is comprised of a mantel clock and pair of flanking vases, is designed in a fanciful French ‘Oriental’ style. The set is crafted from brass which has been silvered, parcel gilt and painted. The clock is also mounted with porcelain plaques which are beautifully painted with colourful depictions of birds and flowers. The mantel clock is composed of a tall rectangular body with a break arch top which is crowned by a covered twin-handled urn. The urn features a parcel gilt pointed finial on its cover and a silvered body painted with pink cherry blossoms. The urn stands on the arched top of the clock, which is decorated with a sculptural gilt scrollwork band and a gilt foliate border. The arch contains a circular porcelain dial which features a central painting of a pair of birds, encircled by black Roman Numerals within white cartouches. This dial is framed by a gilt beaded bezel. The shoulders of the clock body are mounted with parcel gilt and silvered elephant heads holding ring handles. Porcelain panels decorate the front and sides of the silvered clock body. These panels are beautifully decorated with paintings of colourful birds, butterflies and cherry blossom trees, set within gilt stiff-leaf frames. The clock body is set on a silvered rectangular base which is edged with a parcel gilt foliate band. The front of the base is mounted with a silvered and parcel gilt lion's head mask and flanking painted porcelain plaques. The clock stands on four parcel gilt silvered feet, which are geometric and scrolled in form. The pair of silvered vases...

Two Gilt Bronze Mounted, Enamelled Onyx Urns by H. Journet & Cie.
By H. Journet & Cie
Located in London, GB
These beautiful vases are designed in the chinoiserie style. Derived from the French word ‘chinois’ for Chinese, chinoiserie was a European style that was inspired by Chinese and East Asian art and design. These urns were crafted by Henri Journet & Cie, a French firm that specialised in the production of Fine onyx items. Henri Journet replaced Eugène Cornu as the director of the company, which was originally called the ‘Société des marbres d'onyx d'Algérie’. These vases are signed ‘Sté Des Onyx H. Journet & Cie / 24 Bd Italiens'. The vases feature bulbous bodies, with short waisted stems and necks, crafted from an orange-veined, cream onyx. The vases are set on a gilt bronze (ormolu) plinths, which are supported on scrolled legs. The onyx vase bodies are decorated with green, blue and red champlevé enamel depictions of Chinese dragons. Each vase body is mounted with two gilt bronze dragon head ring...

Sèvres Porcelain Garniture, Mounted in Gilt Bronze by Picard
By Henri Picard, Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres
Located in London, GB
With its delightful painted representations of the four seasons and bacchanalian scenes, this ‘bleu celeste’ garniture demonstrates the technical excellence of Sevres factory porcelain. On top of this, the porcelain vases are beautifully decorated with gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts, expertly cast by Henri Picard, the manufacturer and gilder to Emperor Napoleon III. This garniture is comprised of a central jardinière and a pair of flanking vases. The jardinière features a wide porcelain body, which is topped by a gilt bronze guilloche-patterned neck. This is fitted with two geometric handles, which terminate in cherubs masks. The jardinière body is finely decorated with a continuous painting of putti playing together in a woodland setting. One putti holds the pinecone-tipped staff carried by followers of Bacchus (or Dionysus), the god of wine and ecstasy. Several putti ride on a goat, led on a harness by other putti. This painting is edged with jewelled and parcel gilt decoration, set against a bright ‘bleu celeste’ ground. The jardinière stands on a shaped gilt bronze stem, its top encircled by a band of stiff leaves, its middle by a laurel wreath, and its foot by beading. The jardinière is placed on a square gilt bronze plinth, which is decorated with grape-form finials, hung draperies and foliate motifs, and is set on four beaded toupie feet. The pair of vases are similar to the jardinière in their design. They feature ovoid ‘bleu celeste’ porcelain bodies, which are decorated with continuous paintings of the four seasons, within gilt and jewelled frames. Winter is depicted in a scene showing putti huddled together on a sleigh in a snowy landscape, and autumn by cherubs reaping crops with a sickle. Spring is shown by cherubs wearing flower wreaths and dancing while holding garlands, and summer by putti picking grapes and drinking wine. The vases’ bodies are topped by pointed gilt and jewelled ‘bleu celeste’ porcelain lids, crowned by gilt bronze grape finials. Like the jardinière, the vases are fitted with gilt bronze cherub...

Promenade IV, a Unique Ceramic Sculptural Tall Vase in Porcelain by Jo Taylor
By Jo Taylor
Located in London, GB
'Promenade IV’ is a unique porcelain sculpture by the British artist, Jo Taylor. Dramatic in scale Promenade IV is a sheer triumph over the material employed. Known for being one of the most difficult ceramic bodies to work with, scale is always a challenge with porcelain and with this artwork, Taylor excels. Knowing her clay is everything, created in sections allows architectural scale whilst adding grog (pre-fired grains of clay) gives stability and strength. Adorned with her trademark flourishes adds glamourous movement throughout the piece. Taylor’s inspiration comes from highly decorative architectural features such as ornate plaster ceilings, wrought iron and carved stone. Living near the Georgian city of Bath (UK) provides a rich visual resource, although it can be said that she will seek out such details wherever she goes. Regular visits to our larger cities such as Liverpool (UK) and London (UK) offer ornament that can be experienced on a grander scale with their historic buildings such as the Sefton Park Palm House and the V&A holding many further examples. Further afield the architecture of Gaudi in Barcelona, the palaces of Potsdam and the Villa D'Este in Tivoli have all provided inspiration. In her own words: ‘I enjoy the grand gesture present in large scale relief, the drama of deep shadow, the dialogue between space, structure & ornament. The changing light conditions of bright sunlight, a dull day, dusk or artificial light can affect the contrast and way the structure is perceived’ Taylor’s current practice has been evolving since graduation from her MA at Bath Spa...
