About

Shelves/Selves II (After Mondrian), an original oil on burlap over canvas by Helen Rebekah Garber, is a piece for the true collector. Garber's work, an homage to Piet Mondrian, employs the use of layered paint that projects from the surface, providing the viewer an amazing 3-D experience, a distinction from the works of Mondrian. Garber's homage to Mondrian series both pays respect to Mondrian, an important leader in the development of modern abstract art, as well as adds her own level of color, depth and subject matter - all of which uniquely separates the artist from that of her peers. This masterful work would make a great addition to an art collection and enhance most any home, perfect for those who have an affinity for abstract, modern, contemporary, and geometric works. This work is an impressive 4-foot by 5-foot. In the image bank, you will notice this work featured on the artist's easel in her studio with other works in the Shelves/Selves series on the wall. A very unique time capture of the work during/immediately after the artist has created the painting. Helen Garber, an American artist, is well-known for her oil paintings that explore notions of the transcendental, employing a visual vocabulary that highlights elements from a diverse array of iconographic systems. Born in 1976 in Pennsylvania, Garber received a Bachelor of Fine Art from The California Institute of the Arts. Here, she drew inspiration from Eastern and Western traditions, creating her own unique aesthetic and visual language system that reflected both. She engages in a process of layering and negating brushwork, resulting in dense, textured surfaces of patterned impasto that are neither abstracted nor representational. Her work revolves around ideas of feminist ideology, using poetry, symbolic presence and prayer to investigate the collective unconscious and our constant state of becoming. With a Yemenite Jewish ancestry, and a background in medicine, Garber’s intricate and cerebral compositions reinterpret imagery from a wealth of sources personal to the artist. Her paintings evoke a remarkable blend of sources, from West African ceremonial masks to Northern Renaissance altarpieces and stained-glass windows. Based in Los Angeles, Garber continues to exhibit throughout the world. Solo exhibitions include Denk Gallery, CA; Zona MACO, Mexico; Gallery Wendi Norris, CA; 31 Grand Gallery, NY; and Bronwyn Keenan Gallery, NY. Select group exhibitions include Morgan Lehman, NY; Fifth Floor Gallery, CA; Torrance Art Museum, CA; SCOPE UK, England; and Art Forum Berlin, Germany. She has also been featured in numerous publications, including The New York Times, SPIN Magazine, Elle Italia, The Huffington Post, and The Los Angeles Times.
