Dominic Mingolla (1922 – 1999) Mingolla created paintings in many different materials and genres. Best known for his large abstract expressionist watercolor paintings similar in style to Paul Jenkins and for his Enamel work. His work bears affinities both to Lyrical Abstraction and to Tachisme artists such as Nicolas de Staël, Serge Poliakoff, Andre Lanskoy, Hans Hartung, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Gustave Singier, Alfred Manessier, Roger Bissiere, "Lyrical Abstraction arose in the 1960s and 70s, following the challenge of Minimalism and Conceptual art. Many artists began moving away from geometric, hard-edge, and minimal styles, toward more lyrical, sensuous, romantic abstractions worked in a loose gestural style. These "lyrical abstractionists" sought to expand the boundaries of abstract painting, and to revive and reinvigorate a painterly 'tradition' in American art. At the same time, these artists sought to reinstate the primacy of line and color as formal elements in works composed according to aesthetic principles – rather than as the visual representation of sociopolitical realities or philosophical theories." Pat garnered international attention in 2012 when a time-lapse video showing the painstaking production of his Manhattan skyline drawing, Empire State of Pen (2012), went viral. Since then, he has become something of a cityscape specialist, producing large-scale works such as Colossus (2015) and a range of new pieces created for clients such as MGM Park in Las Vegas and Gensler Architects. Pat has recently collaborated on a book with Björn Ulvaeus from ABBA, making drawings in response to stories about his life and has just worked with legendary Podcaster, Roman Mars (99% Invisible) on his first book, which was a New York Times Bestseller. Pat has also established a creative relationship with the Iconic British fashion designer, Sir Paul Smith, painting a mural for him in NYC and will be working with him on multiple London projects in 2024. Carol John's art reflects her encounters with mainstream modern artists-showing the obvious influence of Guston and other individualists like Marsden Hartley and Alfred Julio Jensen-it also suggests an appreciation of certain 'outsider' artists, as with her improvisational approach to composition. Like quilters of Gee Bend, John often begins a work with little idea of where it will take her pictorially. She might find a composition’s repeating pattern needs to be squeezed to fit within a pictures margins or detoured around a corner for completion as if the papers edge were merely a slight obstacle. In their unrestricted manner, the paintings have much more in common with childhood doodles, mindless of convention and heedless of expectations. that is not to say they are directionless.
