Post-Impressionist Landscape Paintings
POSTIMPRESSIONIST STYLE
In the revolutionary wake of Impressionism, artists like Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin advanced the style further while firmly rejecting its limitations. Although the artists now associated with Postimpressionist art did not work as part of a group, they collectively employed an approach to expressing moments in time that was even more abstract than that of the Impressionists, and they shared an interest in moving away from naturalistic depictions to more subjective uses of vivid colors and light in their paintings.
The eighth and final Impressionist exhibition was held in Paris in 1886, and Postimpressionism — also spelled Post-Impressionism — is usually dated between then and 1905. The term “Postimpressionism” was coined by British curator and art critic Roger Fry in 1910 at the “Manet and the Postimpressionists” exhibition in London that connected their practices to the pioneering modernist art of Édouard Manet. Many Postimpressionist artists — most of whom lived in France — utilized thickly applied, vibrant pigments that emphasized the brushstrokes on the canvas.
The Postimpressionist movement’s iconic works of art include van Gogh’s The Starry Night (1889) and Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884). Seurat’s approach reflected the experimental spirit of Postimpressionism, as he used Pointillist dots of color that were mixed by the eye of the viewer rather than the hand of the artist. Van Gogh, meanwhile, often based his paintings on observation, yet instilled them with an emotional and personal perspective in which colors and forms did not mirror reality. Alongside Mary Cassatt, Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Gauguin, the Dutch painter was a pupil of Camille Pissarro, the groundbreaking Impressionist artist who boldly organized the first independent painting exhibitions in late-19th-century Paris.
The boundary-expanding work of the Postimpressionist painters, which focused on real-life subject matter and featured a prioritization of geometric forms, would inspire the Nabis, German Expressionism, Cubism and other modern art movements to continue to explore abstraction and challenge expectations for art.

Born in Shelburne, Ontario, Bernice Martin studied at the Ontario College of Art under noted Canadian artists J.W. Beatty and Franklin Carmichael. After the death of Beatty in 1941, she found friendship in Peter Clapham Sheppard with whom she studied and worked with until his death in 1965. Working in oil, watercolor and woodcut, Martin focused on local scenes such as the Toronto harbor, small towns in Ontario and Northern landscapes including Muskoka, Haliburton, and Algonquin Park regions of Ontario.

This work by Lucien Adrion is a wonderful representation of his impressionistic works depicting the "Pont De La Concorde" bridge across the Seine in Paris with the Eiffel tower in the distance. Using a bright palette of colors, Adrion executes this piece with much attention to detail with figures and cars over the bridge and a man leaning against the edge overlooking the bright water and reflections. There is a boat lower right and we can feel the warmth of the sun contrasted with the cool breeze of the water. Lucien Adrion was born May 25, 1889 in Strasbourg, France. He was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure, and landmarks paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of 18, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich, and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. Manuel Capdevila i Massana (Barcelona, December 28, 1910 - April 18, 2006) was a Catalan painter and goldsmith, son of the goldsmith Joaquín Capdevila y Meya and father of the also goldsmith, Joaquim Capdevila y Gaya.
In 1950 he was invited to The 1950 Pittsburgh International contest at the Carnegie Institute, Pennsylvania, where he presented the painting The Priest, which is currently part of the MNAC collection. A year later the Museum of Modern Art in Panama acquired the work Crisantemos.
He was part of the Morera Prize Jury in 1953. Two years later he signed the manifesto that Alexandre Cirici drafted, creating the Institute of Industrial Design, as a member of the IDIB Management Board of Directors.
At the request of Lluís Maria Güell, director of the Massana School, he assumed the creation of the Open Jewelery Classroom in 1959, from where he made students think and reflect on the new possibilities of contemporary jewelry. Edouard Righetti :
Born July 14, 1924 in Menton (Alpes-Maritimes). Died in Paris in December 2001. 20th century. French.
Engraver, painter and draftsman of compositions with characters, figures, landscapes, urban landscapes, seascapes, interiors, still lifes, animals, flowers.
Édouard Righetti began by taking courses at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier. He then continued his training at the School of Decorative Arts in Nice. In 1949, he met the engraver Edouard Goerg and was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in his studio until 1954. There he learned to work with copper, aquatint, etching. at the waist, the drypoint. In 1953 he made a trip to Rome, Florence and Pisa. In 1956 he obtained a two-year scholarship to Casa Velasquez (Madrid). He participates in group exhibitions, among which: 1953, 40,000 years of Modern Art, Paris; 1958,1959, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, Salon Le Trait; 1959, Galerie Greuze, Paris; 1964, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Tours, as well as at the Salon Pointe et Burin and at the Biennale de Paris. He shows his works in personal exhibitions, including: 1951, Menton; 1953, Galerie Eliane Norbert, Paris; 1961, Galerie Bonaparte, Paris; 1963, 1964, Le Nouvel Essor gallery, Paris; 1965, Galerie Bernier, Paris; 1965, Galerie La Gravure, Pully-Lausanne; 1979, retrospective, Palais de l'Europe, Menton; 1985, Bernheim-Guiot gallery, Paris. He moved to his studio on rue Léon-Dierx in 1964. Righetti's first engravings were still lifes and biblical scenes. He also engraved the sadness of the suburbs, melancholy portraits, and several medals for the Monnaie de Paris. The Department of Prints and Photography of the National Library of France keeps more than 200 of his works.
