George Platt Lynes rare original vintage 1949 gelatin silver photograph of dancer Francisco Moncion. Stamped on verso - GEORGE PLATT LYNES. Photo is 7 3/4 x 9 1/2 inches, glossy finish in excellent condition.
This photograph is Photograph #5 (similar to #4 but the head is tilted to the subject's right) from this rare collection of 12 different poses in the series taken in Platt Lynes's NYC studio in 1949. The cloud backdrop is recognizable in other Platt Lynes photographs. Moncion was a personal friend of Platt Lynes and this photograph is from Moncion personal photographic collection.
George Platt Lynes (1907–1955), was a gregarious American portrait, dance, fashion, and male nude photographer whose career spanned the late 1920s through the early 1950s. From age eighteen, Lynes entered the cosmopolitan world of the American expatriate community in Paris when he became acquainted with the salon of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. He began photographing authors like Stein, Jean Cocteau, André Gide, and Colette and soon established himself as one of the premier fashion photographers in the Condé Nast stable, documenting the ballet companies of George Balanchine/Lincoln Kirstein, and pursuing a private obsession with seductive images of young male nudes rarely published in his lifetime. Platt Lynes photographs are in the collections of every major art museum and university archive including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Yale Art Museum, and the Smithsonian.
Francisco Moncion (July 6, 1918 – April 1, 1995) was a charter member of the New York City Ballet. Over the course of his forty year career, choreographers George Balanchine, and Jerome Robbins in the New York City Ballet created 22 major roles for Moncion including the Dark Angel in Orpheus, Death in La Valse, Prince Ivan in Firebird, and the Boy in Afternoon of a Faun. He was also a choreographer and a talented painter who exhibited alongside Miro, Picasso and Carrado Cagli. Cratsley worked for many years as a gallerist at Marlborough Gallery before quitting in 1986 to become a full-time photographer. An 11" x 14" (Ed of 5) signed gelatin silver print of Friendship, 1994 by Roberta Fineberg is from a world of horse-crazy girls in New York City. A black-and-white photograph, friendship shared by three teenage girls who display their horseback riding bracelets. The girls wear the names of their horses engraved on the bracelets.
The photograph was shot in the 1990s at the now defunct City stable, Claremont, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
The photo is published in the book City Riders (1997) - Howell/Macmillan Publishers

Artist's Bio:
As a visual artist, Roberta Fineberg (RF) focuses on the themes of serendipity, inventiveness, and the development of ideas for her photography, video, installations, works on paper, and painting. Drawn to experimentation, she explores diverse mediums and concepts such as the ephemeral (Butterfly Series), stolen moments (documentary photography), play, timelessness, the enduring, and the significance of matter.
RF, living in New York City, began her career as an editorial photographer while studying in Paris. In France she contributed both photography and writing to publications, landing a column (photos and text) with The Saturday Review while exhibiting photographs in public spaces. Roberta Fineberg’s freelance photography appeared in Le Monde, Jeune Afrique, Paris Match, L’Officiel Femme, Ms, Weltwoche, Vanguardia, among others with images licensed through stock agencies. Photographs were selected for cover art at W.W. Norton, St. Martin’s Press, Harcourt, Bookspan, Simon & Schuster, etc. Print Regional Design Annual New York (2003) awarded her for book jacket photography for If Wishes Were Horses. In 1997 Macmillan published City Riders: A Story of Riding and Friendship her first book of black-and-white photographs and a story about three teenage girls in the 1990s who rode horses at the now-defunct Claremont Riding Academy and oldest stable in New York City.
In 2023, RF created an interactive installation, works on paper on the female body, in a public space. In July 2022, Fineberg’s Double Helix was included in a Sotheby’s auction in New York City and exhibited in the preview show Contemporary Discoveries. Taking a great interest in photography, Kirill began working at the S.Bermeniev’s National Portrait Gallery in Moscow. He was organizing and conducting photo sessions of world celebrities and outstanding figures of art and politics, curated exhibitions, and belonged to the editorial group on creating books, catalogs in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Milan, Vicenza, New York, etc.
In 2012 he received a certificate of completion of the course “Marketing for photographers” and in 2018 completed “Portrait Photography” course at the New York Institute of Photography.
In 2013, Kirill founded his own Collection of author’s photos for interior decoration of homes and office space.
In 2016 he opened a working studio in Moscow.
In 2017 – 2018 there were Kirill’s solo exhibitions:
– “Borislav Strulev and Friends”, Conservatory, Belgorod (30 portraits);
