Lullaby: Jacob Lawrence wife, mother & child family embrace in abstract interior
By Gwendolyn Knight
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
This is a rare print, #46 in an edition of 96 that Gwendolyn (Gwen) Knight created while visiting Philadelphia's Brandywine Workshop with her late husband, the artist Jacob Lawrence. It is signed, titled, and dated along the lower edge. The print itself measures 22" x 30" and is professionally framed in a contemporary dark wood frame with muted green and gold double mats under UV protective glass. Framed measurements are 29.5" x 38". This print can also be found in the permanent collections of: - Washington State Arts Commission - Telfair Museums - David Driskell Center, University of Maryland - Seattle Art Museum and many private collectors. Gwendolyn Knight was born in Barbados in 1913. When she was seven, her widowed mother entrusted her to close friends who brought her with them to the United States. In 1926, Knight moved with her foster family from their first home in St. Louis to Harlem, where her developing interest in the arts flowered in the creative atmosphere of the Harlem Renaissance. In Harlem, Knight became a daily participant in the workshop of sculptor Augusta Savage, in whom Knight found a mentor, and Savage's studio became a second home. Through Savage, Knight first came into contact with Claude McKay...

Dancing Ducks in Red, Green, Blue, Purple
Located in San Francisco, CA
Artist: George Chemeche – Iraqi/American (1934-2022) Title: Dancing Ducks in Red, Green, Blue, Purple Year: circa 1980 Medium: Screen Print Image size: 19 x 27 inches. Sheet size: 22 x 29 inches. Signature: Signed lower right Edition: 260 This one: 77/260 Condition: Very good Unframed This exceptional geometric abstract serigraph is by the noted Iraqi/American artist George Chemeche (1934-2022 ). He is a master of serigraph printing, but this print has more than technical excellence. It is a wonderful, rhythmic abstract composition. I believe Chemeche might have been a proponent of and/or influenced by the Pattern and Decoration Movement which was happening in New York in the 1970s and 1980s. The print has never been framed and is in very good condition. I will ship the print rolled in a heavyweight tube. George Chemeche was born in 1934 and studied at the Avni Art School in Tel Aviv and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. The style with which he is intimately associated, pattern painting, The most serviceable definition is that pattern is the systematic repetition of a motif or motifs used to cover a surface uniformly. The spaces between motifs are either other motifs or are an integral part of the repeat. Usually, patterning intentionally acknowledges the decorative function of art, reconciling both the decorative and the meaningful. George Chemeche’s work hangs in the lobby of the Hotel Chelsea where many have admired it for years. Please search online for more biographical information by this fine artist. Anthony Velonis, Exhibit, Small Sculpture
Located in New York, NY
Anthony Velonis (1911-1997) was an extremely innovative artist. He learned the technique of screen printing, also known as silkscreen, (for which he also coined the term serigraphy) while working with a wall paper manufacturer. Unusual for fine prints, the image is made by the artist in the same direction as it will print, as the colored inks are forced through fabric (silk) directly onto a paper surface. (He also invented a machine that could print onto column-shaped items such as cocktail glasses or make-up bottles and a rack system for drying sheets of paper with wet ink in which the sheets are just inches apart.) The technique allows extreme versatility on the part of the artist and the ink tends to sit on top of the paper rather than soak into the fibers. In 1934 Velonis used this new technique on Mayor LaGuardia's NYC Poster...
