He attended art classes in his youth and in 1918 moved to Paris to study at the Académie Julian, which he left after six months. During this time, Dubuffet met Raoul Dufy, Max Jacob, Fernand Léger, and Suzanne Valadon and became fascinated with Hans Prinzhorn's book on psychopathic art. He traveled to Italy in 1923 and South America in 1924. Then Dubuffet gave up painting for about ten years, working as an industrial draftsman and later in the family wine business. He committed himself to becoming an artist in 1942. Dubuffet's first solo exhibition was held at the Galerie René Drouin, Paris, in 1944; the Pierre Matisse Gallery gave him his first solo show in New York in 1947. The artwork is in mint condition Very rare Notes: Provenance: private company collection - Miami, FL, acquired directly from the publisher Tyler Graphics Ltd., Bedford Village, NY in the 1970's. Numbered by Lichtenstein in pencil lower left. Comes from Lichtenstein's 1976 "Entablature Series" portfolio of 11 prints, (Corlett No. 138-148). Printed in six colors, in seven runs, from five screens, and one embossing plate. Collaboration: Kenneth Tyler (project supervision, plate/screen preparation, proofing, collage, and embossing); Kim Halliday (screen preparation and processing, proofing, and edition printing); Betty Fiske (proofing and edition printing). Swan Engraving processed the magnesium plate. Tyler Graphics Ltd. chop mark/blind stamp lower right. Workshop number inscribed in pencil lower left on verso: "RL75-197". Comes with its original Tyler Graphics "Entablature Series" booklet. Between 1971 and 1976 Lichtenstein produced two series of "Entablature" paintings, using photographs of architectural ornament he had taken in New York as the starting point for his compositions (see Cowart [1981]). The first "Entablature" paintings (1971-72) were black and white. The second group used color and were produced at roughly the same time the "Entablature" series of prints were in production at Tyler Graphics Ltd., 1974-76. The first discussions between Lichtenstein and Ken Tyler concerning the "Entablature" prints took place in May, 1974. As recorded in the Tyler catalogue raisonne, technical research for the project began in September 1974 and production was completed in April 1976. Lichtenstein produced one or more collages for each print in the series to serve as models for the plates and screens. Both the "Entablature" paintings and prints are intimately concerned with texture - the metallic paint and sand of the paintings, the foils and embossing/debossing techniques employed in the prints. The imagery itself - machined architectural ornament - takes technology as its subject. As Barbara Rose suggests, "That industrialism disrupted our notion of style as much as reproduction altered our conception of representation appears to be the subjects of Lichtenstein's "Entablatures". For each print in this series, the Tyler Graphics Ltd. catalogue raisonne gives exact method and press types, as well as the initials of the printers for each run. To complete certain phases of the project, Tyler employed the following companies: Drake Engineering, Danbury, CT (for machining of the metal die); Swan Engraving, Bridgeport, CT (for plate processing); Tallix Foundry, Beacon, NY (for bronze casting); and Tompkins Tooling, Gardena, CA (for machining of the metal die). The ten embossing plates for the series are now in the collection of the National Gallery, Canberra, Australia. Biography: American artist Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York City on October 27, 1923, and grew up on Manhattan's Upper West Side. In the 1960s, Lichtenstein became a leading figure of the new Pop Art movement. Inspired by advertisements and comic strips, Lichtenstein's bright, graphic works parodied American popular culture and the art world itself. He died in New York City on September 29, 1997. Lichtenstein was committed to his art until the end of his life, often spending at least 10 hours a day in his studio. His work was acquired by major museum collections around the world, and he received numerous honorary degrees and awards, including the National Medal of Arts in 1995. In 2013 the painting "Woman with Flowered Hat" set another record at $56.1 million as it was purchased by British jeweler Laurence Graff from American investor Ronald O. Perelman. This was topped in November of 2015 by the sale of "Nurse" for 95.4 million dollars at Christie's auction. Subsequently, that was topped with the private sale of his 1962 painting...

El Herido, 1960's Spanish Avant Garde Political Screenprint Lithograph Signed
Located in Surfside, FL
The Wounded One (El Herido) from Violence (La Violencia) 1969 signed, dated and titled in pencil Dimensions: sheet: 22 1/16 x 30 1/16" (56 x 76.4cm) Rafael Canogar ( Toledo , 1935) is a Spanish painter, one of the leading representatives of abstract art in Spain. Disciple of Daniel Vazquez Díaz (1948-1953), in his first works he found a way to reach the avant garde and, very soon, to study abstraction deeply. He initially used a sculpture technique: with his hands he scratched or squeezed the paste that vibrated on flat colored backgrounds. It was a painting in which the initial gesture comes directly from the heart. At this point, Canogar embodied the best of painting material . In 1957 he founded with other artists the EI Paso group. With artists like Luis Feito, Manolo Millares, Pablo Serrano, Manuel Rivera and Antonio Saura, he begins the Spanish avant-garde movement and continues to do so until 1960. It is influenced by Action painting. They defended, between 1957 and 1960 , an informal aesthetic and the opening of Franco Spain...

Mudd Club New York 1979 street poster (Haring Basquiat related)
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Original Mudd Club poster, New York 1979: A must have for any true Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring collector - this piece is featured in the 2017 Jean-Michel Basquiat documentary, 'Boom For Real.' Promotional poster. 1979. Dimensions: 18x24 inches. Very good overall vintage condition condition; some minor fading consistent with age. Provenance: Obtained directly from the original art designer. The Mudd Club was founded by filmmaker Steve Mass, art curator Diego Cortez, and downtown punk scene figure Anya Phillips in 1978. Mudd Club featured an art gallery curated by Keith Haring on the upper floor. Live performances by New York No Wave bands such as, DNA, the Contortions, Talking Heads & Basquiat's band Gray. On the dance floor, DJs, Anita Sarko and Johnny Dynell played an eclectic mix of punk, funk and curiosities. From the start it functioned as an antidote to the uptown disco glitz of Studio 54. Six months after it opened, the Mudd Club was mentioned in People: "New York's fly-by-night crowd of punks, posers and the ultra-hip has discovered new turf on which to flaunt its manic chic. It is the Mudd Club ... . For sheer kinkiness, there has been nothing like it since the cabaret scene in 1920s Berlin". After its first few years, Studio 54 celebrities like Andy Warhol, Grace Jones and David Bowie began to show up. In 1981, the Mudd Club's Steve Mass began showing up at the more informal Club 57 on St. Mark's Place, and began hiring Club 57 regulars including Keith Haring to help attract the downtown art & music scene. The Mudd Club was frequented by many of Manhattan's emerging emerging cultural figures, such as, Lou Reed, Johnny Thunders, David Byrne, Debbie Harry, Arto Lindsay, John Lurie, Nico with Jim Tisdall, Lydia Lunch, X, the Cramps...

Authentic Screen Prints and Multiples for Sale on 1stDibs

Original screen prints and other types of fine art prints can help enhance any room in your home while supporting your effort to tie an interior design together.

A screen print, also known as a silkscreen or serigraph, is made by cutting out pieces of paper (or textile) and placing them on a mesh sheath, or screen. With the help of a squeegee during the screen printing process, ink is forced through the uncovered areas of the mesh onto a sheet of paper. Each color must be screened separately.

Originally used in the commercial printing industry for advertising and packaging, screen printing is closely associated with the Pop aesthetic. Andy Warhol was the first artist to use the process to create art, and his silkscreens and other prints rank among the highest priced prints on the market.

For legendary Abstract Expressionist artist Jackson Pollock, printing was crucial to the evolution of his abstraction. It was several years after he printed wild constellations of blobs and squiggles, using a small printing screen that he acquired during a brief stint at a silkscreen workshop, that he began splattering canvases with similar abstract imagery.

For Jasper Johns, recognized as one of the most innovative, masterful print artists of all time, printmaking was ideal for exploring the ideas of repetition, seriality, patterning, semiotics, order and symbolism that intrigued him. His crosshatch prints (and paintings, for that matter) are a wonderful reference to the engraving process but also a brilliant conceptual update of Abstract Expressionist brushstroke, which Johns subverted again and again.

Remember, when it comes to arranging your screen prints and other wall art, hanging isn’t the only way to display your artworks. You can stand framed pieces and stretched canvases on an easel, a mantelpiece, floating shelves or on the floor leaning against a wall. This creates a casual look and also allows you to change your arrangements more easily and without damaging the wall.
