Horse Study Blue is a limited edition print by Guy Allen. The detailed etching is made evermore striking by the blue strip.
Born in 1987 in Norfolk, United Kingdom. Today, Guy is a successful international artist, having been exhibited in Dubai, New York, and London and has his work in private collection including Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Singapore and Hong Kong. Guy discovered his passion for print making during his time in Paris studying at the École Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux-Arts in 2010, when he became particularly fascinated with the traditional etching process. Following his graduation from Central Saint Martins School of Art in 2011, Guy moved back to Norfolk for 18 months, from where he still finds his inspiration before returning to London. In 2012 Guy trained as an assistant print maker under Mary Dalton and Stanley Jones at Curwen Studios, Cambridge; where he had to learn at a fast clip how to master other types of print making. In 2013 and 2014 Guy had one of his etchings selected to be exhibited in the prestigious Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London. Guy is represented by a number of galleries in the UK and is working as a full time artist in London, he spends the majority of his time in his studio in Peckham or when he is printing at Artichoke Printmaking Studios. After a successful first solo exhibition in London, Guy had a inspiring response from his horse studies, this year Guy is focusing on the horse as a subject matter. The inspiration behind Guy 2014 entry to The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition ‘The Winner’ Guy explains: ‘The Winner’, depicts my most recent exploration into animal subjects. The title alludes to the multi-million pound horse-racing industry that is prevalent in East Anglia, where I grew up. The horse is one of the oldest depicted animal forms: its musculature and contours have long intrigued artists, who have rendered this subject matter in almost every medium possible. Here, I have brought together a traditional technique – etching – and a timeless subject matter, twinned with a contemporary twist. The diving board not only physically grounds the animal, it also represents the precarious nature of the racing world.

Guy Allen
Guy Allen is an experimental printmaker, exceptional draftsman and highly talented young British artist. Working hard between his studios in London and Norfolk, Guy’s trademark experimental approach to printmaking presents an exciting mix of colour, gold-leaf and an original, contemporary take on the traditional art of etchings.Studying at Central St Martins from 2008 – 2011 Guy discovered the printing press on a trip to the École Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Finding an art form that lent itself so perfectly to his artistic aspirations was a revelation. He has never looked back. Growing up in Norfolk, the countryside and his love of animals have had a lasting impact on Guy’s work. Regularly returning to his Norfolk roots to gather his thoughts and inspiration, his subjects are drawn directly from the Norfolk countryside and are all native species to the land he has known since childhood. This inspiration and drive to create is fuelled ever further by Guy’s love of the printing press. With distinctive style, striking ability and total commitment Guy has mastered his printing-making techniques. Constantly exploring the infinite possibilities and opportunities the medium offers, he breathes new life into traditional techniques and subject matter. Guy also has a huge philanthropic interest and supports many arts charities each year including Art For Youth, EACH, Keeping A Breast, Art For Cure and Well Child.

Original Print, handmade and hand printed etching. An old friend of mine, Brodie the Scottish Terrier. He was a regular at the shows and a wonderful character. Animals have always been at the heart of my work. I find the form, movement and behaviour of the creatures I draw a source of limitless fascination. I love the idea of them watching me, watching them as I draw. I hope my appreciation of the sentience and character of the animals I draw comes across in my work. Over my career I have drawn everything from primates to penguins, dogs, ostriches and even an echidna. These days dogs are my main focus, mostly because I adore dogs but also because they are such an integral part of life. I am delighted by the theory that humans and dogs co evolved, we wouldn’t be what we are without them and vice versa. I try to pare my images down to a balanced simplicity that directs attention to the subject of the picture. I try to balance the subject and the space it occupies, giving each equal importance. Light is hugely important to my work, I imagine my subject in three dimensions as I draw and the light describes the musculature and texture that gives the drawing it’s presence and grounds it in the picture. I aim to capture a pause, a moment where whatever I draw looks like it could wander off or leap up any minute. My influences include Japanese prints, Chinese and Japanese brush drawing and the European artists who were influenced by Japan. I am really excited by composition, by artists like Bonnard and Leon Spilliaert...Category
