Signed 1963 ROBERT INDIANA print (Robert Indiana prints)
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Robert Indiana ERR 1963: A rare, sought-after early Robert Indiana print defined by surreal, experimental cinematic-like energy. Hand-signed by Indiana on the lower right. Medium: Photoengraving and etching on Rives BFK. Dimensions: 4 1/2x6 inches (including margins). Very good overall vintage condition. Signed, dated and inscribed "Artist's Proof 'E'" and "CHI" in pencil, lower margin. Rare Trial proof, aside from the main edition of 60. Printed by the artist at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Further background: According to Susan Sheehan, Indiana printed only six progressive trial proofs at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he learned printmaking from 1949 to 1952, under the supervision of Vera Berdich (inscribed "CHI"). Additionally 13 trial proofs were printed at the Pratt Graphic Art Center, New York (these inscribed "NYC"). The regular edition was printed by Atelier Georges Lablanc, Paris and published by Galleria Schwarz, Milan to be included in International Anthology of Contemporary Engraving: The International Avant-Garde: America Discovered, Volume 5. The plate used for this print was originally given to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago by the R.R. Donnelly Company, printers of Life magazine. Indiana discovered the plate while visiting Berdich at the school and decided to use it in his contribution to the Avant-garde portfolio. Sheehan 29. Robert Indiana 1991: "When I went back to the Art Institute of Chicago at that particular time - I think I was judging a show - I learned that Vera Berdich (Indiana's former teacher) was still there and the idea occurred to me, wouldn't it be fun to do a visiting artist etching, and she concurred. There on the floor was a box of copper plates and the images had been defaced on each one. These copper plates had been donated by the R.R. Donnelly Company, which put out Life magazine. I used to work for Donnelly. My only commercial art job was with them doing the little drawing that appear in the Yellow Pages, like lawnmowers and vacuum cleaners and things like that. Anyway, the idea being that the student was supposed to turn the plate over to use the back side and forget about the image on the front. But I found this image of this actress sitting on her bed with her ironing board and decided it was only very lightly defaced, so I asked if I could use it. And the word "Err" was actually added in New York; it was not in the first proofs in Chicago. Two weeks later, I was thumbing through LIFE magazine and there was this actress in the same page..." About the artist: Robert Indiana is best known for his iconic “LOVE” image, which has appeared across media including sculptures, prints, and paintings and epitomizes the artist’s graphic, predominantly text-based Pop art practice. Throughout his career, Indiana reimagined the aesthetics of American advertisements...

Takashi Murakami Skateboard Decks set of 2 (Murakami Flowers)
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Takashi Murakami Flowers Skateboard Decks (set of 2 works): The black & white deck marks a collaboration between Takashi Murakami and his friend, the rising Japanese artist 'Madsaki' (bio below). The impression is an urban twist on Takashi Murakami’s otherwise highly polished flowers motif - a beautiful juxtaposition between two very different styles from two masters of their craft. This limited work was published by Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki Gallery Japan in 2017. The blue was published circa 2017 in conjunction with the Murakami exhibit: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg, MCA Chicago. A brilliant set that makes for vibrant, one of a kind wall-art that hangs with ease. Medium: Silkscreen on 2 individual Maple Wood skateboard decks. Crisp colors. Dimensions: 8.0 x 31 inches (20.5 x 79 cm) Condition: each housed in its original packaging; excellent overall condition. Each from a sold out limited edition of unknown; stamped by the artist on the reverse of each. Perhaps Murakami's most iconic motif, these candy-colored, smiling flowers came into the artist's work when he was preparing for his entrance exams for the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts, and he embraced the form over nine years teaching prep-school students to draw flowers. One of the most acclaimed artists to emerge from postwar Asia, Takashi Murakami—“the Warhol of Japan”—is known for his contemporary Pop synthesis of fine art and popular culture, particularly his use of a boldly graphic and colorful anime and manga cartoon style. MADSAKI (b. Japan 1974) Joining Murakami has led to a rapid evolution of Madsaki. Now with three Kaikai exhibitions under his belt––Hickory Dickory Dock; Here Today, Gone Tomorrow; and MADSAKI Says “Yo! snipe1 & UFO907, Get Your Asses Over Here!” Madsaki has made a firm imprint on the Murakami canon. In his introduction to Madsaki’s second solo exhibit, Here Today, Gone Tomorrow from 2017, Murakami jokingly points out how his direction and guidance successfully shaped Madsaki’s work. While the debt Madsaki owes to Murakami is patently clear, in an abrupt turnabout it appears that the apprentice guides the master in some ways as well...

Authentic Screen Prints and Multiples for Sale on 1stDibs

Original screen prints and other types of fine art prints can help enhance any room in your home while supporting your effort to tie an interior design together.

A screen print, also known as a silkscreen or serigraph, is made by cutting out pieces of paper (or textile) and placing them on a mesh sheath, or screen. With the help of a squeegee during the screen printing process, ink is forced through the uncovered areas of the mesh onto a sheet of paper. Each color must be screened separately.

Originally used in the commercial printing industry for advertising and packaging, screen printing is closely associated with the Pop aesthetic. Andy Warhol was the first artist to use the process to create art, and his silkscreens and other prints rank among the highest priced prints on the market.

For legendary Abstract Expressionist artist Jackson Pollock, printing was crucial to the evolution of his abstraction. It was several years after he printed wild constellations of blobs and squiggles, using a small printing screen that he acquired during a brief stint at a silkscreen workshop, that he began splattering canvases with similar abstract imagery.

For Jasper Johns, recognized as one of the most innovative, masterful print artists of all time, printmaking was ideal for exploring the ideas of repetition, seriality, patterning, semiotics, order and symbolism that intrigued him. His crosshatch prints (and paintings, for that matter) are a wonderful reference to the engraving process but also a brilliant conceptual update of Abstract Expressionist brushstroke, which Johns subverted again and again.

Remember, when it comes to arranging your screen prints and other wall art, hanging isn’t the only way to display your artworks. You can stand framed pieces and stretched canvases on an easel, a mantelpiece, floating shelves or on the floor leaning against a wall. This creates a casual look and also allows you to change your arrangements more easily and without damaging the wall.
