This exceptional vintage German 800 standard silver Torah breastplate has a circular shaped form.
The surface of the breastplate is ornamented with embossed and engraved elements depicting the pillars of Solomon's Temple surmounted with lions of Judah supporters grasping a coronet design.
The centre of the breastplate bears a central design modelled in the form of the Tablets of Stone*, surmounting a plaque bearing a Hebrew engraved inscription 'שבתק'.
The body of this exceptional silver breastplate is embellished with a broad embossed scrolling foliate decorated border, accented with three silver bells to the lower edge.
The piece is suspended from two linked chains, conjoining to the centre of the upper border with a ring loop.
The hallmarks struck to the surface of this torah shield include:

A silver Torah breastplate is a meaningful ceremonial gift, often donated to a synagogue to commemorate significant occasions such as a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, wedding, birth, anniversary, or in memory of a loved one. It also serves to honour esteemed rabbis or community leaders, symbolising enduring respect and spiritual legacy.
* The Tablets of Stone (Hebrew: לוּחֹת הַבְּרִית Luchot HaBrit - 'the tablets [of] the covenant') can be found in the Hebrew Bible, Exodus 34:1. These were the two pieces of stone inscribed by Moses on Mount Sinai, with the Ten Commandments; later in Exodus they are referenced to as Tablets of the Testimony.
NOTE: The breastplate (Hebrew: ḥoshen mishpat) can be categorised as both a Torah ornament and Jewish ceremonial art. They are functional ornamental metal plates/shields which are suspended in front of the Torah scroll.
In the 17th century the breastplate was classically square or rectangular, however in the 18th century this developed to become more rounded with decorative borders. Further embellishments such as bells and small dedicatory plaques were suspended from the lower edge. These design features were influenced by the Torah Ark (Hebrew: aron kodesh...

It is accompanied by a black edged letter on Buckingham Palace writing paper dated 10th July 1936 saying ‘Dear Sir, I am commanded by the King and Queen Mary to send you these flags which were flown on board “Britannia” at various times during her career, including one of her racing flags. Their Majesties hope you will like to keep these in your club house as souvenirs of the old yacht. Yours Derek Keppell, Master of the Household, The Commodore, Royal Portsmouth Corinthian Yacht Club.” King George died on 20 January 1936 which explains the black edge to the letter. R.S.Y. Britannia played an important part in preparing challengers for the America’s Cup. She was used as a trial horse for the Shamrocks and later, after conversion, for most of the ‘J’ Class yachts of the 1930s. Britannia was built in 1893 according to the plans of G. L. Watson for His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, a keen and able helmsman. From the beginning, Britannia was a successful racing yacht winning races against Kaiser Wilhelm’s Meteors, among many others. Britannia won over two hundred races in her career — a record that has yet to be surpassed. She was beaten once by Navahoe, one of Herreshoff’s boats, but fared better against another America’s Cup yacht, Vigilant, winning twelve races out of seventeen. When Britannia was converted to race in the ‘J’ Class she was stripped of her bulwarks, given a one-piece mast and a Bermudan mainsail. The transition did not interrupt her run of success, although she performed best in hard weather. She was scuttled off the Isle of Wight at the dying request of George V.

Miniature jewellery and music box in the style of a grand piano in a mahogany and walnut veneered case inlaid with marquetry throughout featuring musical instruments, raised on three turned tapered legs. The front opening to reveal a traditional keyboard with brass button slider. The top opening to reveal a green baize lined jewellery compartment bearing a brass plaque signed ‘Asprey, London’. c.1970
