The large porcelain vase of baluster vase form with generous proportions. The bulbous body with high, wide shoulders, tapering down to a flat recessed foot. The body decorated in underglaze iron brown with large designs of tall, leafy bamboo stalks to one side. The opposite side with gnarled branches of blossoming plum.
Bamboo is revered in Korea, and Asia in general for its strength, flexibility and quick growing nature. Plum is invested with similar ideals, representing strength and resilience, as it flowers in the depth of winter.

A ceramic bowl with celadon glaze from Korea, circa 14th century (late Goryeo Dynasty). The particular shape of the bowl suggests that it is likely a "Bo" (Chinese) or "Hattara" (Japanese "Oryoki"). This is a Buddhism term derived from Sanskrit word "patra", which means "vessel that contains just enough". The container was used traditionally by Buddhist monks to ask for alms (donated foods by laymen). The deep volume and the wide opening are conducive to its utility function. The bowl is covered in a jade-color celadon which has very fine and uniform crackles throughout. Upon close inspection of the exterior wall, one can detect a very light brush of white slip circumventing the body. The white slip brushing technique only became popular from 15th century on as a landmark of the Buncheong ceramics...

A ceramic wide-mouthed bottle vase covered in green celadon glaze from Goryeo dynasty circa 11-12th century. The bottle vase with such a form (mouth with wide rim, long and slender neck, tall body with swelled shoulders that taper down toward the base) is known as "kwanggubyong" in Korean and developed from the prototype of bottles from united Silla kingdom. It was used for holding oil or liquid. Some of this type of vase take a plain form without much decoration other than glaze; Some feature basic geometrical lines, such as this one. Three concentric rings were featured along the neck and on the shoulder. Some with more carving on the body (see a vase in the collection of Brooklyn Musuem, 79.246.3) or a simple paint with iron glaze (See c.16-1930 in Fitzwilliam Musuem, Cambridge, UK).
The vase on offer is covered in a lovely green celadon glaze which exhibits fine even crackles throughout the surface. It has a slightly uneven base with the foot ring shaved by the potter. A Korean ceramic bottle with octagonal faceted form with underglaze copper red decoration. The robust bottle with the long neck and a relatively thick built was used to hold liquor such as wine and it was from Joseon dynasty, likely late period (circa mid-late 19th century). The bottle was covered in a milky white glaze with a pleasant warm yellow tint. It has an underglaze iron red paint of branches of gingko leaves on the front and the back side. The color was oxidated into an ochre brown hue instead of iron red. The octagonal form extends nicely from the opening to the base, continuing through the body and makes this bottle geometrically interesting. The rustic paint of the gingko leaves also render the piece a folky modern appeal.

Fine Korean Iron Box with Silver Inlay Joseon Dynasty

A fine Korean iron box that was traditionally used to store tobacco leaves dated to the late Joseon Dynasty circa 19th century. The box is made from iron and has a heavy weight, although the wears along the edges of the lid and base exposes a bronze metal color underneath, indicating the iron metal may contains a high level of copper. The surface was beautifully decorated with elaborate silver inlay that covers the entire surface except the base. The extraordinary workmanship depicts a pair of deer within the circled square (shape of heaven and earth) and a lined background on the long sides and a crane with spread wings on the shorter sides. Both animals were associated with longevity. Their eyes were highlighted with copper inlay, adding a lively touch to the animation. The lid is centered with a Chinese character "Xi" (Paired-Hui in Korean), which means double happiness. (In Chinese culture, it is often used in a wedding ceremony). The large symbol was set on geometrical background of tightly scrolling diamond pattern surrounded by stylized Ruyi mushroom heads, another floral longevity symbol. Archaic fret cloud band borders the entire perimeters of the lid and the container.
Tobacco was introduced to Korean in the first half of the 17th century and gradually gained popularity. When the tobacco was started being smoked in shredded form instead of rolled leaves, there rose the production of the smoking accessories, with some in fine quality as luxury items for the elite. The accoutrement such as this box is a fine example made in late Joseon dynasty, using extensive silver inlay, a technique called "jjoeum-ipsa", in which the silver wires were hammered into the scorched iron surface to create the elaborate design.
Similar boxes with variation of shape and motifs are in the collection of several major museums. Compare the box with item Gu 754 in the National Museum of Korea; item 22.78 in MET NYC and M.240:1, 2-1926 in V& A Museum in London.
