Antique Chinese Porcelain Bencharong Bowl for the Thai Market, 18th century.
Located in Point Richmond, CA
Antique Chinese Porcelain Bowl for the Thai Market, 18th century. Bencharong enamel decoration with Buddhist imagery on a black background. This classic porcelain bowl form having a raised narrow foot rim and slightly everted mouth rim is richly decorated in bright polychrome enamels much favored by the nobility in eighteenth century Siam. This colorful style became known as “bencharong”, a term that derives from two Sanskrit words – panch (‘five’) and rong (‘colour’) and which relates to the number of colours used to decorate such porcelain. This bowl is decorated with typically Thai motifs. The sides are decorated with four Thepanom (Buddhist celestial beings) each wearing a broad necklace of petals and seated on a lotus within triangular cartouches that have a coral-red ground. Four Norasingh (mythical forest-dwelling semi-deity with a human head, torso, and arms but with the hind-quarters of a lion and the tail and hoofs of a deer) against black back grounds filled with flaming pink kranok motifs. This design is framed by two floral bands top and bottom and another double band on the interior mouth rim. The interior glazed in a soft turquoise green and remnants of a floral pattern roundel on center. Sets of porcelain such as this example were commissioned from the Jingdezhen kilns in China and exported to Thailand. 6-7/8 in. in diameter x 3-5/8 high (17.5 x 9cm) 16.7 oz. (475g.) Ayutthaya Period, 18th century. Provenance: German Private Collection. For similar examples see: William Warren & Luca Invernizzi Tettoni, Arts and Crafts of Thailand, Chronicle Books, San Francisco 1994, p.33. Blue And White Yuan-style ‘Dragon’ Bottle Vase, Yuhuchunping, Early Qing dynasty
Located in seoul, KR
The vase is delicately potted featuring a pear-shaped body that rests on a slightly flared foot and extends upward into a trumpet-shaped neck. Its exterior showcases a dynamic, three-clawed dragon in stride amidst flames. This piece reflects a similar style to Yuan dynasty Yuhuchunping dragon vases, while reinterpreting certain details, such as the sharp and simplified shape of the dragon's head, the distinctive straight design of its claws, and the intricate depiction of the dragon’s scales. The sticker on the base indicates that the absolute age was determined through radiological mechanical appraisal using the quantum absolute dating method, with the results pointing to the early 18th century. Period : Qing Dynasty(Presumably Kangxi or Yongzheng Period) Type : Yuhuchunping Medium : Blue and White glaze Condition : Excellent(slight salt residue remains on the surface, and the glaze is worn primarily around the edges, such as mouth and base) Provenance: Southeast Asia, South China Sea from Shipwreck in early 2000s Reference : 1) Christies Hong Kong 26 SEP 2024 - Lot 2 (Price realised : 819,000 HKD / Type : related) * Yuan-Ming Style from Qing Dynasty During the Qing dynasty, many ceramics were produced that imitated the styles of the Ming and Yuan dynasties. This practice was not mere imitation but a creative endeavor to inherit and innovate upon past techniques and styles. Qing dynasty ceramicists mastered the exceptional techniques of Ming and Yuan ceramics and used them as a foundation to develop more advanced works. Particularly, Yuan dynasty blue and...

Korean Ceramic Buncheong Ware Tea Bowl Early Joseon Dynasty
Located in Atlanta, GA
An antique Korean Buncheong stoneware tea bowl (chawan) from early Joseon Dynasty circa late 15th to early 16th century. The bowl with a short ring base is nearly entirely covered in a white slip except the base (known as sougusuri in Japanese, total glaze). Iron-colored scrolling vines were painted on with quick and deft brush strokes, rendering the bowl a vital and spontaneous appeal. It appears that the bowl was dipped in the white slip instead of being brushed on, observing from the slip pattern left on the rim of the bowl. The bowl shows significant age and evident of use for tea drinking. There are losses of glaze flakes throughout, along the rim and inside the bowl. The flake off the glaze left a dark spot on the rim, exposing the deep colored clay underneath. Inside the bowl, many of the glaze flakes appear more superficial and retains a yellowing color from the tea stains (known as amamori, rain leak). There is a historical crack line on the exterior (surface only) that result in associated small losses of glaze. It appears that the crack line was the result from the kiln firing and gradually the glaze around it started to reduce. The bowl comes with a later wrapping cloth and a wood tomobako box, but they are not original to the piece. This particular type of Buncheong ware was associated with the Hakbong-ri kilns in the sacred Mount Gyeryong Mountains, west of Daejeon city in the Chungcheong province. During early Joseon Dynasty, the emperor decided to reject Buddhism to embrace the Confucianism. As a result, many monks were forced to abandon their religious life and returned to the secular society. The monks in Gyeryong mountains set up the kilns and started to produce this so called "Hakbong-ri" type of Buncheong ware. The production was shorted-lived for only a few decades from late 15th to early 16th century before it turned to porcelain, but the ware made during that period was noted for their fresh and enigmatic appeal with deft iron-paint decoration. Collectors cherish these rare pieces for their vitality and spontaneity often used them on important occasions of chado in Japan and passed down to generation. For a similar bowl, see Catalog 52 illustrated on page 87 of the book "Korean Buncheong Ceramics...
