Chinese Antique Cinnabar Lacquer Round Box with Eight Hermit Design, Qing Period

About the Item

This extraordinary Chinese cinnabar lacquer round box is very detailed in amazing quality. A technique of engraving pattern on thick layer of red lacquer applied many times is used in this piece. The lid has motifs of eight hermits and the god of longevity in the center surrounded by the motif of peony and bat which is the symbol of happiness in traditional Chinese culture and the character of ? which means longevity and celebration. On the side of the body has the motif peony and Chinese character of ? in different design with the lid. From the lid to the bottom, very detailed multiple geometric patterns are fully hand carved on background overall. Three-dimensional effect of hand carving is wonderful.

    An unusual and fine antique Chinese Qing lacquered and inlaid papier mache handled sewing box with decorative panels dating from latter 19th or early 20th century. The sewing box is of round cylindrical shape with a swing carry handle and is inlaid with mother of pearl and abalone.
