Served as a traveling cabinet as well as a shrine and carried like a backpack for the Buddhist priests and monks during long pilgrimage, this rare chest is known as Oi Japanese. In China the carrier case is known as Ji, traditionally used by the traveling scholars or monks in the ancient time to carry their belongings such as books, clothes, and stationary. The piece on offer here is of Japanese origin and dated to Edo period (circa 17-18th century), possibly older to 16th century of Momoyama or Muromachi period. It was likely reserved for the use of a high-rank priest to carry the Buddhism scripts based on its luxurious high quality. A heavy and finely cast Japanese bronze mirror decorated with pines , cranes wich are longevity symbols, The handle in the center is a a tutle which also symbolize longevity.
Edo Period, 18th century, Japan.
The small, round mirror with high walls has been intricately and exquisitely cast with symbols . The turtle has a domed shell pieced to allow a cord to be strung through for handling or hanging.
A five charactesr mark is cast on the border.
Mirror is 12 ,3 x 1,6 cm
Box is 14,2 x 5 cm
Surrounding the turtle and inscription is a densely cast landscape featuring pine trees with fantastic needles, two cranes with their 3 youngs, dense stalks of leafy bamboo. and a blooming prunus on the left side.
All are symbols of longevity. Bamboo also symbolizes resilience and prosperity. Bamboo asociated with prunus and pine are called the 3 frinds of winter.
The other side of the mirror is undecorated, and would originally have been highly polished, allowing the user to see their reflection in the polished surface.
The bronze with a wonderful, warm silver patina.

Japanese Silk Scroll of Daruma Hanabusa Itcho Edo Period

A Japanese hanging scroll attributed to Edo period painter Hanabusa Itcho (1652-1724). The artwork features a silk roundel nicely mounted in golden brocade background. The painting depicts a robed Daruma seated in meditation with his eyes widely open. The rendition of the famous monk, one of the most beloved subjects in Japanese art, was extremely minimalistic. With just a few effective ink strokes and patches of watercolor, it managed to successfully highlight the essence and spirit of Daruma. The roundel was possibly a center fragment of a larger painting by the artist and was remounted historically. Signed with one of his artist's names. It comes with a wood scroll box with ink inscription of title and artist formal name.
