18th Century, Japanese Edo Period Lacquer & Chain Mail Suit of Samurai Armor
Located in Atlanta, GA
Japanese, Edo Period (1603-1868), likely late 18th century. Step into the rich tapestry of Japanese history with this exquisite 18th-century Edo Period Lacquer & Chain Mail Suit of Armor, a masterpiece that seamlessly blends martial craftsmanship with artistic elegance. Crafted during a period of unparalleled cultural refinement, this armor is a testament to the meticulous skill and dedication of Japanese artisans. The Gosuko armor, at the heart of this ensemble, embodies the traditional armor design of the Edo Period. Each meticulously lacquered plate, carefully adorned with ornate motifs, reflects not only the functional sophistication required for battle but also the aesthetic sensibilities intrinsic to Japanese art. The incorporation of chain mail adds a layer of flexibility and mobility, harmonizing the demands of protection with the fluidity required in combat. A crowning glory to this armor is the Kabuto Helmet, an iconic symbol of samurai identity and resilience. Its design not only provides formidable protection but also serves as a canvas for artistic expression. The helmet's form, combined with lacquer embellishments and a crest, creates a striking visual statement, a representation of the wearer's identity and lineage. To complete the ensemble, the armor comes with a brocade fabric, adding a touch of regality to this already magnificent piece. The interplay of textures and colors in the brocade further elevates the visual impact, turning the act of donning this armor into a ceremonial experience. For the discerning collector, this piece is presented in a lacquer armor box, meticulously crafted to safeguard and showcase the historical significance of the armor. The accompanying wood armor display stand serves as a stage, allowing this masterpiece to command attention in any setting, whether it be a private collection, museum exhibit, or a distinguished living space. Woven in the age of the third Qing Emperor Yongzheng (1722-35), this delicately coloured precious silk brocade is embellished by three parallel and offset rows of children holding a cornucopia of auspicious symbols. In the first horizontal row, the child is holding in one hand a closed lotus flower, symbol of honesty, goodness, beauty and purity, and in the other a stick which a pair of coins, an element belonging to the group of Eight Precious Things. The following row depicts the child holding on one hand the Paintings, one of the four symbols of literature and science, and a peach blossom on the other, a flower associated with Spring and rejuvenation. 18/19th Century Unique, Large Burmese Buddha, 8030
Located in Ukiah, CA
Compelling, large Burmese Buddha. It is unique in many ways.  First, it looks like a specific person (as opposed to a sculpture of a generic figure), which is never ever done when sculpting a Buddha statue.  Second, is it figure looks European. the facial features look European, the body shape and the way the body is sitting look European, and the tunic the figure is wearing looks more European than it looks Asian.  It has a rare and beautiful "lotus" cap finial that I've never seen on a Burmese Buddha(or any Buddha) before. A real mystery. Looks to be at least 18/19thC. Everyone has a strong reaction when they see him-they smile.  Sits a full 19 inches tall-extremely large for this type of bronze. Retains an almost untouched chocolate brown patina.  My gut tells me that at some time during the English occupation in the 18th or early 19th century either had this Buddha specially commissioned, or was given this Buddha as a special gift by either a major Temple or spiritual leader, or by a significant political leader of that time and place. in breaking with long spiritual tradition, they had the person's image and Anglo heritage melded with a  Shan style Buddha...
