A ding of rectangular form and upon four cylindrical legs. A loop handle to each end and flanges to each corner and side. The ding is cast in relief on all four sides with a taotie mask, with a leiwen ground, the thunder motif depicted by juxtaposed square spirals. Above each taotie mask there are depicted kui dragons. A collar to the upper section of each leg further decorated with kui and leiwen, the collar with a flange to the outside edge. The bronze of dark colour with chocolate brown highlights.

Well balanced and solid structured tabletop cabinet made from huanghuali, (Chinese Rosewood). It dates to the 17th/18th century Qing dynasty. The chest is composed of two framed doors, which when open, reveal two inner shelves. The lower shelf suspends a pair of drawers. The door panels and the chest are raised over aprons elaborately carved with classical Chinese foliate tendrils. The cabinet is fitted with baitong hardware. Blending naturalism with ethereal fantasy, this spectacular embroidery or ‘suzani‘ from Central Asia conveys an aesthetic consistent with older examples of the genre. Certain features, most notably the vine-scroll, are reminiscent of the Samarkand school, while the drawing of the blossoms seems more prevalent in the repertoire of neighboring Shahrisabz. Indeed, this piece may in fact be a common ancestor to both. Splendid palmettes with flame-like tracery and bold swirling star-centered blossoms alternate within the border. Vegetal scroll meanders throughout—drawn with several shades of green conveying, if not a sense of shadowing, definite and deliberate tonalities of light and dark. The central hourglass form, idiosyncrasies of drawing, and arrangement of blossoms in the field imbue a sense of classicism rivaling and surpassing older Ottoman and Persian models.
