About the Item

The features of this stone Foo lion has been softened by being exposed to the elements for many centuries. Still a very handsome sculptural specimen made from carved stone, it is known as Foo Dogs or Fu Dogs in western culture. The lion serves as stone sentinel, an iconic gatekeeper seen throughout Asia. Traditional symbol of protection, lions are made from durable materials, bronze or stone. While their decoration style varies by culture and religion, handsomely carved and highly detailed, the lion is universally indicative of power; initially reserved for temples, royal palaces and the wealthiest of families.
