Utagawa Hiroshige 歌川廣重 Woodblock from"The 53 Stations of the Tokaido" 1832
Located in Norton, MA
Utagawa Hiroshige 歌川廣重 Woodblock from"The 53 Stations of the Tokaido" 1832 Artist: Hiroshige Utagawa was born in Edo as Tokutaro Ando and grew up in a minor samurai family. His father belonged to the firefighting force assigned to Edo Castle. It is here that Hiroshige was given his first exposure to art: legend has it that a fellow fireman tutored him in the Kano School of Painting, though Hiroshige’s first official teacher was Rinsai. Though Hiroshige tried to join Toyokuni Utagawa's studio, he was turned away. In 1811, young Hiroshige entered an apprenticeship with the celebrated Toyohiro Utagawa. After only a year, he was bestowed with the artist name Hiroshige. He soon gave up his role in the fire department to focus entirely on painting and print design. During this time he studied painting, intrigued by the Shijo school. Hiroshige’s artistic genius went largely unnoticed until 1832. In Hiroshige's groundbreaking series of woodblock prints, The 53 Stations of the Tokaido (1832-1833), he captured the journey along the Tokaido road, the highway connecting Edo to Kyoto, the imperial capital. With the Tokugawa Shogunate relaxing centuries of age-old restrictions on travel, urban populations embraced travel art and Hiroshige Utagawa became one of the most prominent and successful ukiyo-e artists. He also produced kacho-e (bird-and-flower pictures) to enormous success. In 1858, at the age of 61, he passed away as a result of the Edo cholera epidemic. Utagawa Hiroshige’s woodblock prints...

Antique Indian Rustic Low Seat Wooden Chair with Carved Rosettes and Twine Seat
Located in Yonkers, NY
An old Indian rustic wooden low chair from the early 20th century, with hand-woven twine and carved motifs. Charming with its rustic appearance, this early 20th-century Indian low wooden chair is a delightful fusion of craftsmanship and practicality. The chair features a short slanted back topped with a small finial, adorned with rosettes hand-carved in low relief within medallions. The front legs are baluster-shaped, adding a touch of elegance, while the back legs showcase a curving silhouette, enhancing the chair's overall aesthetic. The nicely weathered appearance of the wood gives this piece an authentic, timeworn charm that brings warmth and character to any space. Ideal as a decorative accent, this rustic chair can be placed in a mudroom, where it serves as a charming seating option for putting on shoes, or in a child's bedroom, adding a whimsical touch to the decor. Carved Wood Gilt-Lacquered Sculpture of Seated Japanese Edo Buddha Amida Nyorai
Located in Studio City, CA
A truly beautiful and supremely serene Japanese Amida Nyorai Buddha. A magnificent work. Meticulously hand carved in such fine and amazing detail (see hands and flowing robes). Gilded throughout. Seated with narrowed eyes in deep meditation and hands in Buddhist Abhaya Mudra position offering a blessing of protection, reassurance, peace, and benevolence. This hand position, also known as the "fear not" gesture, was achieved by Buddha immediately following his enlightenment. This work is from the late Edo period, (1603-1868)/ early Meiji period (1868-1912). From a California collection. Would be a fantastic addition to any Japanese or Asian artifacts/buddha collection or eye-catching stand-alone accent work in about any setting. One of the best Japanese Buddha sculptures...
