Late 19th Century Large Carved Cabinet from Dong Yang, Zhejiang, China

About the Item

A late 19th century large carved cabinet from Dong Yang city, Zhejiang province, China. This cabinet is a distinct design of cabinets from this region, who are famed for their wood carvings. For both the top and bottom sections, only the middle doors can open, but the panels on the ends can be taken out by removing the wooden pegs from inside, see the video for demo. There are many interesting carvings on this cabinet, right at the top at the waist is a pair of phoenix and a peony in the middle, an auspicious combination. On the top doors, the carvings are very deep & lively, from left to right: willow tree & dog, bamboo & sheep, pine tree & deer, cherry blossom & goat. The brass handles are mostly original except for the door pulls on the top doors. Material used would have been Elm and Pine, with the carved panels carved from Camphor wood. The top protrudes slightly and the size is L159 x W62.5cm, the body measures L155 x D60cm, height is 175cm. Beautiful original colour finished with a semi-matte clear lacquer.
