About the Item

Antique Tiffany & Co Aesthetic Movement sterling silver cream and sugar. This striking 19th century matched cream and sugar set was made by renowned jeweler and silversmith, Tiffany & Company. Tiffany was founded in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young and the company quickly established a reputation for fine design and exacting manufacturing standards. According to company literature, "By 1870 Tiffany & Co. had become the America's premier silversmith and purveyor of jewels and timepieces.". This circa 1870 Tiffany cream and sugar set dates to the period when Tiffany's was headquartered in New York City's Union Square and its new in-house silver manufacturing department was operating under the leadership of Edward Chandler Moore. A world traveler, Moore was strongly influenced by the art and architecture of the near and Far East and was responsible for incorporating those motifs in Tiffany's silver designs of the period. Moore's exotic designs meshed with the ideals of Aesthetic Movement which celebrated "Art for art's sake", resulting in opulent designs like the one exemplified by this ornate cream and sugar set. The cream and sugar have a satin finish and have been decorated with a series of applied flowers and swags. The pieces have been further embellished with finely chased details with an effect that resembles draped fabric. The handles of the cream and sugar are angled, echoing the line found in the body of the pieces. The sugar bowl is topped with a domed lid bearing the same applied floral decoration found on the body of the pieces along with chased curtain and tassel-like designs. The sugar bowl's lid is topped with a finial which has a stylized Islamic Fleur-de-lis design. The cream and sugar are fully hallmarked with period Tiffany marks reading "TIFFANY & CO" in an arch along with the location of the company, "UNION SQUARE." The pattern number "1513" and company order number "148" are also stamped on the pieces, along with the partially legible rubbed mark "QUALITY 925" "1000" designating silver content. The cream and sugar also bear the old English script "M" initial mark used by Tiffany from 1854-1870. The cream and sugar are in very good antique condition with no removals or repairs. The pieces shows minor signs of use commensurate with their age, including slight waviness present on the ring which makes up the pedestal foot of the sugar bowl as well as on the interior lip of the sugar's lid. The lower portion of the sugar bowl's body also has two minor dimples. As seen in the accompanying photos, these issues do not detract from the appearance of the pieces and are mentioned for accuracy. The creamer stands 2.875" tall to top of the handle and is 4.625" from the tip of spout to the back edge of the handle. The foot measures 1.875" in diameter. The sugar bowl stands 4.5" tall to top of the finial when the lid is in place while the body itself is 2.5" tall as measured to the top edge of the handle. The piece measures 5.125" from the opposite edges of the handles. The mouth of the sugar bowl is 3" in diameter and the foot is 2" in diameter. The pieces have a combined weight of 15.980 OZT or 1lb 1.5oz. This rare cream and sugar set is a wonderful example of Tiffany craftsmanship at its best and would be a great addition to a collection of Fine silver. An elegant and useful decorative accent sure to be noticed wherever it is displayed.
