About the Item

This unusual matched pair of sterling silver tazzas were made by the Baltimore Silversmiths Manufacturing Company, founded in 1903 by Frank M. Schofield. The tazzas have been finished in the elegant Castle Landscape pattern and feature ornate repoussé decoration consisting of turreted castles with crenellations along with exotic birds and a proliferation of flowers and scrolls set on a stippled ground. The interior surfaces of the shallow bowls bear an engraved diaper pattern and have round blank cartouches at their centers which are bordered by a floral ring. The pieces have polished stems and domed feet decorated with large repoussé flowers, leaves and swirled scrolls while the rims and feet are bordered by thick applied silver bands finished with engraved foliate scrolls. The set is hallmarked with early Baltimore Silversmiths Manufacturing Company marks in use from 1903-1905 consisting of a lion head in a circle flanked by the letters S and B in diamond-shaped cartouches along with other manufacturer marks. The tazzas have a combined weight of 1210 grams. These striking silver tazzas would be a wonderful addition to a collection of Castle Landscape pattern sterling or work equally well showcased on their own. A fine example of antique American silver ideal for display or for serving nuts/fruits.
