About the Item

Circa 1968 manufacturer’s catalog for the Italian lighting company Flos, showcasing the innovative and influential designs by Tobia Scarpa and by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. Founded in 1962 by Dino and Cesare Cassina as a lighting design research laboratory, Flos rose to prominence producing both the Rationalist and the more fanciful designs by Scarpa and the Castiglionis. The Tobia Scarpa designs include Fior di Loto, Nictea, Nigritella, Sfera, Foglio, Nuvola, Fantasma, and Fantasm piccolo. For Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, the list includes now-iconic works such as Taccia, Snoopy, Jucker, Padina, Toio, Arco, Velella, and the so-called “cocoon” lamps Viscontea, Taraxacum, and Gatto piccolo. Each entry features stylish photography by Giorgio Casali—acclaimed for his work for Domus—along with line drawings and specifications. 4to (8.25” x 11.75”), printed wraps, approximately 62 unnumbered pages, b/w illustrations. Text in English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian. Layout and design by noted Swiss-born graphic designer Max Huber. 8A scarce and important design document.
