Presented is the first edition of George B. McClellan Civil War memoir, McClellan’s Own Story: The War for the Union. The memoir was published posthumously in 1887 by Charles Webster, in New York. It is presented rebound in stunning quarter navy leather and cloth boards, with raised bands, gilt tooling, and titles to the spine, and new marbled endpapers. The book comes with a new archival cloth slipcase, with an inset image of McClellan on the front.
General George B. McClellan is one of the most controversial figures of the American Civil War. His chief contribution to the Union cause was his brilliant ability to organize and train troops. Yet he proved to be an overly cautious and indecisive General. Despite early wins in West Virginia, McClellan began to fear the Confederate Army’s growing size and strength. He grew increasingly hesitant to engage without more men or resources and disagreed with many of Lincoln’s war decisions. As a result, McClellan was removed as General-in-Chief in the spring of 1862, though he retained command of the Army of the Potomac. After the Battle of Seven Pines, a hasty retreat to Washington after the Seven Days Battles, and the epic contest at Antietam, McClellan was removed from all command in November of that same year. He went on to become the unsuccessful Democratic Party nominee in the 1864 presidential election against the Republican Lincoln.
Criticized after the Civil War, McClellan never publicly defended his actions as commander of the Union army. In this book, however, his memoir provides his answers to the many critics. Using a combination of military documents...

Putting archive and contemporary photographs of the same landmark side-by-side, Savannah Then and Now is a visual chronicle of the city's past The early settlers of Savannah built their houses around a geometric street plan on a bluff above the Savannah River. They were aided by the Yamacraw tribe and their aged chief, Tomochichi, who became firm friends with Savannah's founder, Englishman James Oglethorpe, and both their names are commemorated across the city. Oglethorpe's vision for "open-space squares surrounded by the rhythmic placement of streets"would later earn Savannah the prestigious status of becoming a National Historic Landmark. Savannah boomed as the cotton trade expanded in the South, and by the mid-19th century the city was thriving as it exported cotton bales to Europe and acted as a staging post for travelers. During the Civil War, in 1864, Savannah was surrendered to General William T. Sherman following his March to the Sea, which began in Atlanta and ended in Savannah. Thankfully, General Sherman spared Savannah the torch, and the elegant Georgian residences were saved. However, it took a group of resolute Savannah ladies to preserve some of the best architecture in the city in the 1950s, as many historic buildings were scheduled for demolition. Their hard work and enterprise has helped preserve the city's architectural heritage. Spoor 1921 on inside front cover by Emery Walker. Elegantly printed with text within decorative frames on each page. Spine lightly rubbed, small tear to the inside front endpaper.

Condition: Near Fine
Edward Fitzgerald continually revised and rearranged his version of the Rubáiyát, which was first published privately by the author in 1859, through four distinct editions during his lifetime. This third edition settled on 101 quatrains (as opposed to 75 in the first edition and 110 in the second), which is how it solidified. 500 copies were printed. A RARITY.
In this third edition the translator is not credited on the title page, nor is the introductory text. Fitzgerald said of his Persian translations that they were "All very well, but very little affairs..." (from the Bibliographical Note in the 1926 Shakespeare Head Press edition, which we are offering, inventory #416)
This copy bears the bookplate of Chicago business mogul John A. Spoor. An avid book collector, he assembled a notable and impressive book collection during the late 19th and early 20th century, which was auctioned in 1939 by Parke-Bernet New York over the course of 6 days. The Morgan Library holds a number of books with the Spoor bookplate in its collections. This bookplate was engraved by Emery Walker (1851 – 1933), an engraver, publisher and photographer active in the Arts and Crafts movement, whose work in type design inspired the evolution of private presses in the UK, among them William Morris' Kelmscott...

Presented is a photoplay first edition of London After Midnight by Marie Coolidge Rask. This printing was published by Grosset & Dunlap, in New York, in 1928. The book has been beautifully rebound in striking ¼ green leather and cloth boards, with raised bands and gilt stamps and tiles to the spine, and a matching green archival slipcase. The book is illustrated with eight stills from the original silent film.
One of the most collectible Grosset & Dunlap photoplay editions, this book was a novelization of the 1927 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer mystery horror film of the same title, co-produced and directed by Tod Browning. The movie starred Lon Chaney in a dual role of Scotland Yard Inspector and vampire; this was his only movie role as a vampire. Due to the success of the film, Marie Coolidge Rask penned the novelization of the movie. Rask worked from Tod Browning’s screenplay as well as the original source material, Browning’s short story "The Hypnotist.” The book was published by Grosset & Dunlap in 1928 and included eight stills from the silent film.
The last known copy of the film was destroyed in the 1965 MGM vault fire, along with hundreds of other rare early films, making it one of the most sought-after “lost” silent films. Copies of the film have never surfaced. This 1928 book is therefore important and collectible, as it is one of the few remaining records of the film’s content and storyline.

Presented is the 1847 First Edition of Taylor and His Generals. Published by E.H. Butler & Company, the book has numerous portraits and engravings throughout. It has been beautifully rebound in quarter leather and marble paper boards. The spine has gilt embossed decoration stating that it’s a first edition. The book is housed in a custom-built archival slipcase with a photo of Taylor on the front.
Written and published before Taylor ran for the Presidency, this book would have been a powerful propaganda tool for the soon-to-be 12th President of the United States. The full title page describes the work as “Taylor and His Generals; A Biography of Major-General Zachary Taylor; And Sketches of the Lives of Generals Worth, Wool, and Twiggs with a full account of the Actions of their Various Divisions in Mexico Up to the Present Time; Together with a Sketch of the Major-General Winfield Scott and an Account of his Divisions in Mexico.”
Taylor fought and commanded troops in the War of 1812, Black Hawk War, and the Second of the Seminole Wars before playing a major role in the victory of the Mexican-American War. The book takes the reader through the early life of Taylor and his military career with a particular focus on his surprising victory at the Battle of Buena Vista. Generals Worth, Wool, and Twiggs that served under Taylor and Major-General Scott each get a chapter dedicated to their own history and military careers
